Default Severn River shoreline restoration opportunity

SRRKC members enjoy spending time on the Severn River and its tributaries. On several occasions in the past, groups of our members have volunteered to plant oyster clumps and grasses to restore shorelines and improve water quality.

A few weeks ago, I visited SRRKC member John Page Williams at his office at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) headquarters. He introduced me to a CBF staff member, Carmera Thomas, who coordinates shoreline restoration programs. She invited me to participate in several of her upcoming events. Most of these were far from Annapolis. However, she is holding an event to restore shorelines on Back Creek (the next tributary beyond Spa Creek) on June 2.

Any SRRKC members interested in this opportunity should contact Carmera at MDRestoration@cbf.org.

Details on the event can be found at http://www.cbf.org/page.aspx?pid=195...t=6%2f2%2f2012

I wanted to bring this back to the top. This Saturday (June 2), the Chesapeake Bay Foundation will hold a Living Shoreline Workshop & Wetland Planting event in Eastport on the Back Creek side from 9:00 to 1:00. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please follow up with Carmera Thomas at the links given in the original post.

I stopped by the shoreline planting session this morning for a while. They had a large number of volunteers of all ages who helped carry trays of grasses to the shoreline, dig small holes, and plant the seedlings. The work went fast with so many hands. The tide was dropping until 11:00 so that more creek bottom became exposed. Here are a few photos I took before leaving.
