Default Search for the Lost Colony

The Lost Colony. I guess by now most of you have heard about the new information concerning the Lost Colony which was just released this past Thursday. There now seems that there is a possibility that the members of the Colony moved their fort from Roanoke Island to a location near the confluence of the Chowan River and the Sound in Bertie County, N.C. I have read that the location they think is where the colony moved to is today a golf course and housing project. CF, I'm betting Merry Hill, N.C., what was the Innsbrook, golf and boating community located right on the sound is where you will see some activity looking for artifacts. I've played the course twice and it is a very pretty place. Call it up on google and take a look. Course is in and is about 6 or 7 years old and it is going to cost some money to do any digging there, but around the course it was going to be a retirement community which never developed with only a few homes being built. If this is the place they are thinking about they might find some undeveloped areas to dig in. I am looking forward (not to be confussed with Obama's new slogan.) to hearing more about the search for the Lost Colony.

I read earlier today that they think the fort for the Lost Colony is somewhere on the property of the Scotch Hall Preserve in Birtie Co. N. C. The Innsbrook Golf and Boating Community sold out to this investor over a year ago. For those of you who might not have read about the new find here is some information.

This is what the place looks like.

Hey AC, My Mom was approached by a historian a couple years ago and was trying to find people in the NE part of the state that know that their families were tied to the area way back in generations. He thinks that The colonist decided to move in land up the Albemarle Sound so they would have access to fishing and fertile farm land to better sustain a living. He also thinks that the Colony broke up into groups and spurred off up the tributaries of the Sound. He has traced families way back and has never found where some of these families Originated from. Not because He thought there was poor record keeping for those particular families, but that they were descendants of the spurred off colonist. He has some evidence to back his theory. One of the spurs was off into Perquimans river at a place along the river called New Hope. The other two places were located in Bertie County. One on the Avoca farm. Right where the Golf course is. And the other is a place a little further inland called Ross's a few miles away SE from Colrein. The reason He was so interested in My Family is that My Mom had a Great Great Grandmother who was an Indian descendant of Wanchese. She can tell me her name today If I asked her. So I have Indian Blood dating back to Wanchese in Me. Now on My Dad's side, My Great Granddad farmed In New Hope until He lost the Farm in the depression. He then moved to Chowan County and was able to farm Montpelier or what is now the Edenton Airport today and was a Marine Base in WWII. He then moved to Sandy Point and Farmed there. My Family farmed that Land for 70 years until 2005 when it was purchased by a developer. Housing bust stopped the development and the farm is being farmed by someone else now.

But to make a long story short, He was trying to trace back the lineage from my great granddad back as they lived in a very very old house that was believed to have housed several Generations of My family and He is thinking that they might be descendants of that spur of the original colonist that went up the Perquimans. That is My Dad's side and My Mom's is the Connection at Ross's in Bertie Countie where there is evidence of colonist moving there and is also the area where My Mom was raised and her family is dated back there for Generations.

I am very interested in his conclusions and findings. He is writing a book right now about it. I can't remember his name but I think My Mom has his contact info.

So I know I have tracings back to The Indian Wanchese. It is possible that I have tracings back to Original colonists on Both my Mom and Dads side of the Family. That blew My mind but The Historian thinks there are quite a few people still in My area that have ties back.

My Dad and I were talking about it last year one day and we figured up the average lifespans for the generations would put me at about a 14th to 18th generation American Farmer. That would put me and maybe a very few others as one of the oldest lines of Farmers in this country. That is crazy stuff Man.CF

Ed, that is a very interesting history of your family. What you say fits right into that which they are now speculating did happen and the next step I would guess is to develope a dig site. Don't know how long it will take them to get things inline to begin to dig but would hope maybe sometime this summer. I did read somewhere in the last few days that a few years ago some pottery was found along Salmon Creek and that this pottery was tied back to the pottery found on Roaoke Island and the Colony there. They never followed up on this find, I guess because there was no other ties to it but until now. Salmon Creek is on the western border of the golf course and infact if I remember right one of the tee boxes sits almost on the creek bank. Not having any training in the field of looking for old sites such as this, but for my research and digging of civil war sites; I would say along Salmon Creek would be a good starting point. Ed keep us up dated on anything you might hear about what is going on.

AC, Salmon is a good sheltered creek at the mouth of the chowan/Edenton bay and very close to the Roanoke/Cashie. It would be a very central location for their needs and it has good farmland right to the creek banks. Oh yeah, I know the creeks have changed a lot around here in the last 100 years or so in water depth because there are old stories of folks being able to go in boats to a few places that is just shallow swamp now.

They could have been using areas back then for boat travel that are no longer available today. That could complicate searches for new areas as well. Very interesting stuff.CF

Here is a satellite view of the area. You can really see the golf course and Salmon Creek. When the screen comes up punch MAP then hit SATELLITE.

Ed, got home and asked my wife where her mother's family was from down in North Carolina. I knew she had spent alot of time researching them. She never was able to find when the first came over from England but knows they were a very well known family from the Aulander area. She knows they were members of the Conoritey (spell) church which is the oldest church in the area and the first one room school house built in the Aulander area was built on my wife's Great Great Grandfathers' land. He was a farmer who own a great amount of land. Maybe her family goes on back to one of those from the Colony.

Here is some detailed information about the lost colony before they went and got lost.

    http://the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/

They don't sound too excided about finding anything in Birtie County do they. Maybe once White left to go back to England they broke out the old piece pipe and had them some weed with the Indians and made everything cool again. If you read real careful it sounds like there is already a dig on schedule. Would be fun to take a few weeks off and go volunteer to work in the dig.
