CF, I found this under one of the sub tabs on that which I have posted.

First Colony Foundation historian James Horn of Colonial Williamsburg suggested in his recent book, A Kingdom Strange: The Brief and Tragic History of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, that the majority of the 1587 colonists relocated at the head of Albemarle Sound on the Chowan River. He comments that "documentary evidence suggests an early and sustained interest by the English in the Chowan and Roanoke River systems. The discovery of a symbol seemingly representing a fort where the Roanoke and Chowan Rivers meet provides dramatic confirmation of the colonists' interest in exploring the interior (where riches were to be found) and connecting the two Virginias, Roanoke and Jamestown."

Could James Horn be the Historian who talked to your Mother and A Kingdom Strange be his book you would want to read???? Let me know, I might try to find the book myself.

CF must have gone and join the Lost Colony, he's no where to be found; I haven't heard a word from him even with a PM. Had the wife order me a book; A Kingdom Strange written by James Horn and I'll let you all know what he says. Sure hope old CF isn't over there at the golf course with his tractors, plowing up the greens and fairways looking for his great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather.

Hey AC, Sorry for the late reply. Did not realize it had been that long since I checked in. Been busy and just a quick run on and off the computer when I get a chance. School projects been driving me nuts. Daughter has had 4 to do and Son has had 2 with his senior project as one of them. Have not heard Mom say what the guys name was that was talking to her. I will see if she remembers next I see her. I feel ,like I have been gone to the lost colony.CF

WHERE WOULD YOU DIG???????? Haven't done any reading on the Lost Colony other then what I've put on the board in this thread. Now, due any of you want to take a guess as to where will they begin their digging in looking. If you go back to the map of Solmon Creek and zoom in pretty tight on the red mark, my guess is to the right of the red mark, once you get back over land you see a road which ends in a cul de sac. Somewhere near the cul de sac would be my choice. My thinking is 1. they would use the water of the mouth of the creek and the sound as part of their defense in placing the fort so as to have the indians attack the fort, over land from only one direction. 2nd; I'm going to make a big, big guess that they, the Colony; had small boats of some size and if so, they would use the inter portion of the mouth of Solmon Creek to port their craft and keep them sheltered. If my guess is correct I do not think they would build their fort too far away from their boats. I have been searching the net looking for any information about the dig which is to take place but nothing yet. Anyone else have a guess? Ed; being local down there, if you hear anything about the dig starting let me know if you would.

BOOK REPORT Daughter got me the book, A Kingdom Strange yesterday as a father's day present. I'm going to give you all a short book report so for those of you who don't want to know what it say's because you are planning to buy the book yourself don't read anyfurther. Book is 238 pages; is not until page about 180 that White is leaving England for his trip back to Roanoke Island and the Coloney. Some details I learn from the first 180 pages that answered some questions I had was within some months after his return to England he was outfitted with another ship with supplies and a few more men who wanted to join those already over there. They left England and sailed south but were stopped by a French Man of War. The French took all the supplies on the ship and turned them loose.They had to return to England and before Smith could get resupplied the Spanish tried to invade England which brought everything to a stand still for White as far as getting under way again. Another thing which struck me was only a few Indian tribes where friendly to the Colony and they couldn't trust them to far. Alot of the first 180 pages is about what was going on in the Roanoke Island area 10 years up till the time the 118 people arrived. Now for those of you who did not know it, White had agreed with those left behind that if they left Roanoke Island to carve in letters on a post where they had went to. If they moved because of Indian attacks they where to carve a cross over top of the place they went to; if no Indian trouble no cross. Well when White did get back he found the word CROATOAN carved in a post with no cross over top of it. In the latter pages of the first 180 Mr. Horn tells of the establishment of Jamestown and about Captain John Smith adventures which, twenty years after the Lost Colony went and got lost, he is told by two different Indian Chief where they are. Got to go to town with the wife and daughter so I'll continue when I get back if you want to hear.

OK we're back. By the way, I read the book in 5hrs, some yesterday afternoon and finished it this morning. Now James Horn begins drawing his conclusion both from writings from Captain John Smith and others who mostly heard stories told by Indians. What he writes is that soon after White left for England the 118 members of the Coloney split up. About 15 or so went to live with the Indians on Croatoan Island and the rest moved to a camp near the mouth of the Chowan River. He thinks since White knew of the Indians on Croatoan Island that he could find those living there very fast, and they would tell White where the others were. Horn even writes in the book that the camp was on SALMON CREEK.(sound familiar???) As months turned into years without White returning the main group at the mouth of the Chowan probably felt they were going to spend the rest of their years living with the Indians. Horn thinks they split into three groups, some living with the Indians along the west bank of the Chowan, some in camps along the Cashie Creek and along the Roanoke River with the Tuscarora tribe. To this date some of the Tuscarora tribe claim to have their white man's blood in them. The settlers lived with the Tuscaroras and Chowanocs for nearly 20 years before a catastrohe came to both these tribes. The Powhatans under chief Ocanahonan and over 400 warriors attacked the Tuscaroras and Chowanoes with instructions to kill all whites. Horns research in following the stories told by the Indians in 1616. 1622 thru 1650 all seems to be similair. Remember I posted in my last thread about the Colony must have had some boats. Horn writes that White did record that the Colony did have a few skifts and one large ship which could carry up to 45 men. CF, I do have to read the notes and index but Mr. Horn does not elude to any of his direct research in the area. I must say, if any of you are into the Lost Colony and the theory what happen to them I do recommend you buy the book and read it.
