I might need a lawyer to be able to figure out the crab regulations. But does anyone know the regulations when it comes to using crab traps in virginia instead of the pots? I am referring to using topless crab traps. Do you need a license to use these and is there a limit on how many you can use at a time?

From the Virginia Marine Resources website:
Exemptions from the licencing requirement:
1. Taking by dip net, hand line, or two crab pots as much as one bushel of hard crabs and two dozen peeler crabs in any one day for personal use aboard any vessel. If crabbing occurs from shore (crabs are not possessed on a vessel) the possession limit is one bushel and two dozen peeler crabs per person per day.

Thanks for the info. The collapsible trap being the same as a hand line clears it up.
