Thumbs up Severn River Fishing Report May 18 2012

I went fishing today with my good friend Jeff on the Severn river and the tide was high at 5:30 am.I caught some nice grass shrimp at the ramp first thing this morning. We went to the right of Eagle nest point and worked the grass beds in 3' to 5' of water and only caught 4 perch 8" to 10".So we went to the oyster reef outside of Asquith creek in 11' to 12' of water and the fish were there, but I didn't bring my marker to mark the fish.So once I got off the fish I couldn't find the again ,so we went in Asquith creek and work the schools of bait fish and only caught 10 perch 8" to 10".We were using my 1/32oz Glo-jig below a float about 18" with and without grass shrimp and my 1/8oz feather Spinner bait in white w/ white & chartreuse feathers. We left there and went to Brewer's pond and worked all the shady spots we could find since the sun was getting bright. The perch were 8" to 12" and we found a new fisherman at the pond.We caught about 15 perch and one nice pickerel about 22".We left there and finished our day in Maynadier creek where we caught about 10 more perch 6" to 9".So if you plan to go fishing good luck and GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS...................WOODY P.S. Jeff only took 17 perch home

Way to go Woody. You did better than I did yesterday.

I launched my kayak at Jonas Green park yesterday about 2:30 and fished several shallow locations within a mile radius. These are areas that hold perch throughout the summer. In two hours of fishing, I had just one bite, and that fish came off before it surfaced. The water quality in two coves/salt ponds was not good. It was a brownish color. Plus the aquatic plants (plants not grasses) were so thick in many areas that I could not cast out without getting snagged.

The water in the main river looked pretty good. As I paddled across the river several times to visit new locations, I could see bottom and suspended marks on my fishfinder in the middle of the river. I did not have any tackle heavy enough to jig on those marks, but would have been interested in seeing what was there.

Enjoyable day fishing with Woody. Always great when you get a chance to get on the water with a good friend.

You guys did much better than I did. I live in the Naval Housing directly across the river from the Naval Academy. I am able to rent Boston Whalers from the Marina here and was very excited to get my first chance to do so today. It was great to be out on the water again, but I certainly showed that I have no idea what I am doing in this area yet. I jigged the bridge pilings of the 50 bridge and the 450 bridge with a light green / metallic paddle tail jig and a blue metallic and white jerk shad and got absolutely nothing. I also threw out a Gulp Bloodworm and a hook with Fishbites Bloodworm and let it sit on the bottom in both locations to no avail. I worked the northern side of the channel jigging between the two bridges and got nothing. Then I tried Carr Creek with a 1/8 oz. feather spinner in both white and chartreuse and nothing... I was very frustrated. I didn't really focus on shady spots, though. I guess that was my mistake. I sure would have liked to have gotten into a pickerel. Keep those reports coming, because I have a lot to learn about this fishery.

Wow, Woody... Thank you. I might have to take you up on that. Although, it might be awhile... We just had kid number three last night. A little unexpected... Two weeks early.

Scott, can anyone rent the Whalers, or are they for Navy personal only?

    M. Fish... they are only for active duty or retired military personnel. I'm not in the Navy, as I only have kids in one country.
