While I've never fished for makos, maybe you can beef up the stuff I use for blacktips inshore. All of my piano wire rigs are tied with haywire twists on both ends. Braided wire is usually crimped both ends
Ok guys, its been a long time since I've been mako fish'n on my boat. I may do a little mako fish'n along with tuna fish'n on Friday. How do you guys rig your shark rigs (hook to wire ect.)? Thanks...

Wire, haywire twist, hook, hunk of meat and chum. With the exception of threshers, sharks, including makos are easy to hookup so not much skill involved. The end game is whole nutter matter, especially for makos. I'll use Still Thinkin as the training aid on what not to do for makos (no offense Bob but this video is classic for gaffing green makos).![]()

60-80lb main line________bimini twist___________400lb mono wind-on 25ft_______________400lb barrel swivel_______________5ft of 19 wire ____________12/0 J hook or 16/0 Circle hook.
Most guys use a two part leader.
First part with hook is solid wire - #17 or #19. 3 to 5 feet long.
Next part can be cable or heavy mono. More and more are using mono in the 400 to 600 lb range. Cable is 480 or so.
The idea is the short solid wire can not be bitten through and will not kink in a short length. The mono or cable allows the shark to roll but will flex.
A long solid wire could kink and once kinked - breaks very easily. All cable leader can be sawed through strand by strand so this combo works great.
Total leader length should be 2-4 feet longer then any shark you think is out there. Most guys use about 20 feet.
One trick - keep pre made mono leaders in zip locks. Often Blue sharks will roll up in them and it's best to use a new one.
I like to rig some with 4 to 8 oz egg sinkers. It rests against swivel to solid wire.
Look for hard type mono that long liners use.
What could be more mundane than dying of old age or of natural causes when there is death by misadventure to be pursued ? Skip
That helps a lot guys. Thanks. If I fish Friday I will drop a report...

HEy just another idea try and either find yourself a tail rope or make one. Gaffing a green mako never the best idea if you get a tail rope on him you can at least have some control
Not to highjack your post but what are the seqence of events that happen with a mako or thersher along side of ur boat that ur gonna kill?? Straight gaff?? Flying gaff?? tail rope?? Thanks in advance!
