New River Float
Some people have asked about this so here is what I know about the New and my experiences floating it.
We float the WV section just below Bluestone Dam (Hinton) to Thurmond. It's a solid two day float in a canoe without doing much fishing. We typically do the trip for three days and fish all out (8-9 hours a day). I've done the trip in both a float boat (11 foot Dave Scadden) and a canoe and the toon is definitely the way to go. There are some serious rapids in this section and you can plan on flipping a canoe at least three to four times a day at low water levels which is when you want to fish this section.
Before you go check the water levels on www.usgs.gov as any rain in western NC, SWVA or WV will cause this river to blow up quick and then you are in some serious trouble. Also call this number for the Bluestone Dam recording that will give you up to date info on the water levels, clarity in the tailwater and a brief fishing report. It's updated daily. (304) 466-0156
There are plenty of good camping options on the river due to a lot of sand beaches at almost every bend in the river. This is by far the most beautiful float I've ever done including the Shenandoah, Holston, Potomac, Juanita, etc... There is literally nothing once you put in at Hinton so be preparred for the worst and bring a back up rod. Big smallies are in this section of the river.
If anyone is planning on doing a float in this section of the river BMail me for more details.
