good spots to flyfish annapolis without a boat

hey folks,

anyone have some decent recs for spots to fish without a boat in annapolis? i dont wanna trespass on anyones property!

Dave, depends on what you're looking for, but frankly there are no good public shore spots for fly rodders. You can try the old Annapolis Waterworks Reservoir, there's some fish to be caught there but you'll need to get a permit from the city. It's catch & release only. You can also try around Jonas Green at the east/north side of the RT 450 bridge, but that would be very hit or miss from shore. I know there are folks who launch kayaks from there, which give them a bit more water to fish, but it's very limited from shore with flies. Heck, it's hit or miss with bait from there.

You can also try Sandy Point State Park, but again, very limited from shore. They rent boats there however if you're inclined to spend the money for a day's fishing. I'm not sure what they charge, but seems I read recently that it's like $120 per day.

Unfortunately the whole area is very limited unless you have a watercraft of some type, or know someone with property on the water who'll give you access.

Dave, Your might want to try Thomas Point Park (http://www.aacounty.org/RecParks/launch/thomaspoint.cfm). You will need a stripping basket and might need to move away from the actual point when it gets crowed, but it's about the best public place that holds decent fish (sometimes). I would bring an intermediate and sinking line. Good luck.

thanks for all of your responses! ill check out all of the above mentioned spots. it seems that annapolis is dry when it comes to shore fishing.

check out triton beach state park in edgewater. you can wade there and there's a nice bass lake from what i hear in there also. there are some good spots to cast for croaker and perch around the rocks. also check out the kent narrows bridge at night. you can't wade but you can cast from the shore and pick up plenty of stripers throwing small silversides and tiny baitfish patterns.

Try golf course ponds and Whitlock style bass poppers on a 6 wt with floating line. They usually don't mind early morning or remote pond corner fishing so you don't distract the golfers.

Good suggestion! Seems I read that Eisenhower in Crownsville allows fishing in some of the ponds. But, don't try it in some of the private courses unless you can get permission (Yeah, good luck with that!) I remember some guys way back in High School who were sneaking into Chartwell's Golf Course to fish getting chased out by the county police!

I used to fish at a golf course on Kent Island with a friend who's father owned a house right on the course. He had permission, but some of the golfers really bitched at us for being there, even though we were on the opposite side of the pond from where they were playing. One of the grounds keepers stopped by one day & told him that some of the golfers had complained! My friend knew the grounds keeper & had fished there many times. The side of the pond we fished has a road along it & houses, not like they would be playing on that side, but they still complained!

Has anyone checked out Triton beach park yet? Is the pond here shallow enough to wade out into? The park is just a couple miles from my house and I'd love to check it out, I'm trying to learn fly fishing without going all the way out to the Gunpowder and bass/panfish is just fine with me.

Not really close, but closer than the Gunpowder (that's NOT the place to learn), check out the various spots along the Patapsco River. Daniels, the old steel bridge on Old Frederick Rd, the park off of Rt. 1, etc. Lots of bass, bluegill, fallfish, and it's a great place to wade on a hot day.

DR Gonzo - get a float tube off ebay for nothing and haul it in there and slay fish. There is a ton of nice structure and cover there for bass. I haven't fished it but it's gotta hold fish. There are some shallow parts I've seen when hiking but it's pretty muddy.
