rockfish colonial beach/cobb island

I am headed down near cobb island on the lower potomac this weekend and i was wondering if anyone new if there is any kined of a rockfish bite down in that area and if so. What is he best way to catch them there. Thanks -Chris

You might want to post in the Northern Neck forum since most of the Potomac reports are there. I fished the area you mentioned for 30+ years but don't get down that way unitl July the last 10 years. My guess is trolling or live-lining spot (or perch might be easier to find now) would work. Wish I could be more help but good luck and post a report about how you do.

I would drag a couple bucktails around the humps or St Clements Island. Should be able to pick up a few keeper rocks. The croaker bite is wide open in that area if you want to do some bottom fishing.

Thanks i will def give that a shot. I am not to familiar with that area were exactly are the humps and st. Clements island in relationship to cobb island. I will get some bottom fishing in as well my 4 year old daughter loves catching perch

My boys have been going out and slamming the Croakers in the Wicomico. Check a map...there is an oyster bed between Hatton Creek and Dolly Boarsman Creek. Fish anywhere along the channel markers between the creeks. Squid and shrimps are the ticket. St. Clements is the island on the main Potomac south of Cobb Island. It is located at the mouth of the St Clements Bay/Breton Bay. Lots of croakers to be had there too and rockfish can be caught along the rip rap or trolling small bucktails near the drop offs. The "humps" are located in front of Cobb Island itself. Go a few hundred yards offshore from Cobb Island and drive from the north end to well past the southern end of the Cobb Island. Watch your electronics and you'll see why its called the humps.

come out of the channel at cobb island and head for bushwood wharf stop at the channel marker half way I think it's #5 or #9 fish the ledge. For lunch go to Bushwood wharf and get a crab cake. Mmmmmmmmmmmm Sadly my great aunt Alice Quade is no longer with us but her crab cakes are. Greg

Thanks all, am planning to fish the same area this weekend with my 88yr old father in law... Probably best if we can bottom fish for croaker. Makes for a tough day for me, looking after him, the boat and the rods.... But hey, he's still with us and fishing! Dock

I stayed at a house just north of cobb island last weekend, fished one morning off a pier and caught a million small perch and two large cat fish (25"). The owner of the house told me the previous weekend they caught around 25 catfish. I think we would have caught more cats but could not keep the perch of the lines.
