Default Installation of an Alpha-1, Gen-1 lower unit...

OK, I hope someone knows more than me about this. I spent 4 hrs on Sun. trying to install my lower unit. I had the shift shaft stem turned all the way to the right (clockwise). The front shift pin was pointed to 12:00'o clock. The prop was locked in on a counter clockwise spin (forward) and the shift lever was the whole way front. Why didn't this unit go up into place? Everything was where it was supposed to be, but yet it would not go into position. It's giving me constant headaches. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thank you, Bob

Yes, a year ago we aligned the OD and engine. Over the weekend when we where trying to install the lower unit I tried repeatedly turning the prop counter-clockwise but I couldn't get it to go up tight against the upper unit. I spoke with my daughter last night who was helping me. She said that when we were trying to push the lower unit up tight that the peice she was holding would turn ever so slightly and be out of place. It is the peice that the shifter stem goes up into. At the other end of this peice is a small "point" that has to be pointed to 12:00 O'clock and stays inside a yoke. According to her when I was pushing the lower unit up it would go all the way in except for about a 1/8". It appeared to her that the shifter stem was "off" by about 1 tooth and when fully inserted into this peice the "point" would come out of the "yoke". The shifter stem I had turned all the way to the right (clockwise) so to keep it in forward. I hope you have a suggestion but if not I'll keep playing with it until I can get it right. Thank you, Bob
