The names of the crew this week will be kept anonymous to protect the innocent. I almost didn't post a report but figured folks can learn from what didn't work as well as what does. The plan was to look for fish to jig on. If that didn't work then troll and finally go bottom fishing.
The trip started our in front of the West River. I always look for the close to home fish. There was tons of bait all day everywhere we went. We drifted a couple of points jigging but nothing. The fish were around but not schooled up so we trolled a bit. I started with the same 4 rod spread as in previous weeks with mostly spoons. There were some large slicks but nothing there.
I called a friend of mine that I saw at the ramp he was doing better south so off we went. There were much better marks there. The fleet was trolling so I put out the trolling gear again. We worked the area with the fleet and away from it by about 1/2 mile. The marks were better away from it but still no hits. We changed the spread up a bit putting removing a #2 planer and replacing it with a 20 oz weight and a spreader bar with hyper striper teasers and storms on it. The line at 12 bars also got changed out for a similarly rigged spreader bar. We continued to toll until about 11:30 with only one short fish to show for it. All storms came back with their tails intact.
The next part of the plan was to bottom fish so on the way back north we stopped off at an area and did some bottom fishing on an oyster bar. We started our drift in 20' and then drifted up on the bar bouncing the bottom rig all the way. Baby rock were plentiful often catching them 2 at a time. As we caught bigger white perch we stuck them in the livewell in case we didn't get enough for dinner. We also caught spot on a more regular basis but not enough to be reliable for livelining (soon). After a couple of hours of steady action we called it a day. The white perch in the livewell were released to be caught another day. It was a close call but I didn't feel like cleaning them.
Hope to fish on Wednesday afternoon with some friends from work. Definitely back at it next weekend.
