Default 1st time w/ fowl necks

Left the dock @ 600 with my 8 yr old daughter and when we got to my normal spot, there was a boat running 2 long lines with clam bags. I figured there was no reason I should run close to him so I found a wide bend in the river where there were no boats and the depth was a constant 10-11 ft. This was the first time with fowl necks and I was impressed as soon as I had opened the 40lb box. I had cut them all up, salted them down and baited my line on Friday.

From 7 to 930 we caught a little over 2 dozen nice rusty keepers with only a couple throw backs. My daughter did some dipping (with me holding the back of her life jacket) and she missed a few but had a blast. When I pulled the 1,100ft in, I noticed the bait still had a lot of life in it. So all in all I was impressed with the new bait and will use it from now on. And we had a good trip together. By the way, this was in the Choptank, above the Cambridge bridge.

Sounds like a fun day to me. Were you up around Secretary? I ran my line baited with fowl necks twice two different times this year. There will be times when all the small ones tear it up and you can't use it twice though...................Gary

Yes it was around Secretary. I was told that once you put the necks in the water for a couple of hours they loose their blood and couldn't be used twice, so I re baited. Seemed like a waste to me since the meat had hardly been touched. Did you do OK when you used it the second time?

Slashmaster...when you salted them down you were pulling the blood out of them. If you are only going to run once you might want to run fresh. But if little crabs are around they will tear them up quicker. I would take night nurse advice and run it till they are gone.

I've never had good luck with chicken necks when I salted them and I would think that fowl necks would be the same. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that salting them will make you have no luck with them, just not as good if not salted.

If my necks are still in good shape, I put my line in the freezer. I never salt them down. I catch just as good the second time. never ran it 3 times............Gary

Thanks for the info guys. I'm gonna run the line with fresh bait Thursday, then re-use it on Friday. This heat is brutal to re-bait in, so it will be a good test.
