Default Annapolis Area LTJ - Black Drum???

I did pretty well on Friday from 5:30-7:30am with strong outgoing current with endless undersize rock (12-16") and many 10"+ perch... and managed to get 3 keeper size rock up to 22".

On Saturday am I went out a bit later, 7-10am, again outgoing current. The undersize rock were smaller, other than one that was 17.5"... and there were fewer big perch. But I did get an interesting surprise - a 15" Black Drum ! I have never caught one before so I had to get out a fish chart to figure out what it was and that it was 1" too short to keep. I have only heard of Black Drum further south - how uncommon is it to catch one in Annapolis area?

Sorry no pics... cell phone cam was broken. And then when I got back to marina I somehow managed to lose the broken cell phone overboard . So now I have a new cell phone and next report will include pics!

Nice catch. Black drum have been caught in that area and even a little north. General Warren Magruder caught a big one two years in a row above the bay bridge on the west side (search for Candy Thompson's article in the Sun). The mouth of the Chester is also a place to luck into one this time of year. The furthest north I ever caught one was Stone Rock. Here's a pic from three weeks ago.

You were jigging too, weren't you? Was hoping you'd chip in.

The bay area near Annapolis is very interesting - never know what type fish will so up each year.

The salinity in the area can range high enough that Spanish Macks will be caught - then next year low enough that Catfish are caught.

So far this year - salinity is up , so likely we'll see fish more common to the south show up.

Congrats on a unique fish on a jig - most are caught on bait.

You don't hear about too many drum caught on jigs. Don't misinterpret that to mean they aren't. It's their belligerent attitude toward lures that attracts artificial bait fishermen to them.
