Now that's funny right there. Phillip, might be a crapshoot on the tuna weather.

My favorite screen shots are of the wreck of the three-masted 19th century schooner Herbert D. Maxwell. This is a good place to start for anyone who is attempting to dial in a side scan unit. She's within easy reach of Sandy Point, Mattapeake, or Annapolis in deep water, so email me if you want the coordinates. There is some screen glare on this shot, but I have more pics here: http://www.chesapeakelighttackle.com...ert-d-maxwell/

There are some incredible fishermen posting on this thread, so I know you guys will get this one. I've been working hard lately trying to dial my unit in so I can tell how deep I'm jigging on these #$$%%^& suspended fish. I'm getting close. What do you think?

You got it Shawn. Not sure the sensitivity has to be quite that low to see your jig. I can usually see the jig at -4 sensitivity on auto. In shallow water with lots of bait it may be necessary to cut it down farther but I have not needed to do it. Suspended fish are great once you get into their zone. Most of the winter we are fishing suspended fish in the ocean.

You know better than me Shawn so this is really a question: When I am jigging suspended fish, I am trying to put the bottom swing of the jig 3 to 5 inches ABOVE the fish. Fish seem to want to move up to take a bait and, my experience, almost never will go down to take it.

Agree, Pat. In water less than 30 feet or so, I always go to the bottom first just as a reference point.

My HDS 10 with SS will show fish and will show bait but is not as detailed as Shawn's and others who have posted. I just called Lowrance and they said to lower the transducer up to an inch below the bottom of the boat. WOW! That is certainly not what any of the instructions for installation recommend. The rep expects that to improve the image. He said if it does not they will replace the ducer.

Right now my SS bracket surface flush with the bottom with the plastic part of the ducer in the water.

For those of you who have an HDS with SS, where is your ducer relative to the bottom of your boat?

My xducer is mounted the same as yours.... flat edge of the SS bracket is even with the bottom of the hull, putting the plastic part of the xducer completely below the bottom of the hull. I would also agree that my down scan and side scan images have no where near the clarity that Shawns does or some of the others that have posted..... I still love the unit and can easily determine bait vs. fish, etc but, it is not as detailed as some of the images being posted here.

That's just too much like a video game...
As far as where you want to jig, (there are no absolutes, and many variables of course) I find you want to keep the bait above the fish, a lot of fish (not just rock) will perceive something rushing at them from below as a threat, regardless of size, on the other hand, if these things are chewing, it won't much matter, visibility has a lot to do with it as well. Jigging 5" from the fish?...I don't know about all that...

I am definitely going to lower mine 1/2" below the bottom of the boat to see if it makes any difference. I will post the results. It will be a while though because I am going north for a week with Simon's Regulator. I will not know if it made any difference for several weeks. The way the water comes off the bottom of boats may vary. Some may need the ducer a little lower.

Is there a reason why you guys just dont go with a thru-hull transducer? I understand that the structure scan isnt available as such. It is not like some of you troll and need to know speed through water.
