    Default Great Wicomico

My in-laws retired and moved from north of Baltimore to Heathsville a couple years ago and we always look forward to our visits to spend time with them doing some boating, crabbing, and fishing. Northern Neck is absolutely gorgeous and very peaceful. In the past we have done ok catching some croaker in various spots on the Great Wicomico, mostly near oyster beds on cut squid. My son and two daughters (ages 9-13) really love fishing with me and my father-in-law and I would appreciate any advice locals might have on any methods, spots, lures, baits, etc. to use in the area. Are there any good spots for flounder and/or specks in the GW? We can catch all the bull minnows we want at their pier for bait, too. Thanks in advance for any help.

Stop in and meet Capt Billy Pipkin or his wife Mary at Ingrams Bay Marina. He knows the area well and a great guy to chat fishing with. He loves helping put kids on fish. My kids (10/8) keep asking, "when are we going back to Capt Billy's place". His web site is http://www.captbillyscharters.com/pages.asp. He is out of town for a few weeks fishing offshore out of VA Beach, like his "Captain Billy's Charters" on Facebook and you can see their daily haul!

We've been fishing the Great Wicomico for about 4 years (we are also in Heathsville). For some reason we don't have much luck there. The best thing I caught was a cownose ray about 25lbs (it broke my rod). We also catch mostly croaker and spot. We caught one striper there about 12" while bottom fishing. If you go to the Rt 3 bridge there are ton's of baitsize spot, just use a really small hook and a small tip of fishbites. I've also caught a couple small striper off our dock way down the river but its not very productive even though I can hear tons of them chasing the minnows around. We also haven't had much luck with using those bull minnows as bait, spot seems to be better.

    Good Luck!
