Default My first keeper Rock and loads of Perch

Yesterday, the power being out was a perfect excuse to go fishing. Apparently, not many others thought so because there were not anywhere near as many boats out as normal. The main bay and the Severn River were both nearly flat until about noon, so it was a great morning to be out. I fished multiple spots at and around the Bay Bridge in the morning, with little success to speak of That is, until I hit the western rock island at about 0930 and picked up this guy...

Hopefully, the first of many. Then, a guy anchored down right in the spot I was drifting... right in the middle of the current at the rock island. Wow... nice.

Then I went into the river and cruised up to the Asquith Creek reef and the perch were everywhere... huge schools of them lighting up the sonar. Picked one up nearly every cast for an hour or two. Seems if it is bright and sunny out, they will be there. If it is overcast, they won't. Only kept two that were 11".

Good work Scott. You are learning more about our local fishing each time you get out. Soon you will be the one offering advice to the newbies (and to some of us oldtimers).

Nole. I've caught 9 keepers in the river this year, ranging from 19.5"-25.5", including 2 at the reef. There's good fishing in the river. I seldom leave.

    Mill,
What are you catching them on (and how are you fishing it) in the river? I've yet to catch one over 10" in the river.

I use a fluke-style or bass assasin plastic on a 3/8 oz jig head. I work piers, points, grass beds, rocks, etc. Any structure that I think may hold fish. I let it sink to the bottom, then work it slowly, jigging and retrieving.

For perch, nothing beats Woody's lures. I was turned on to them prior to woody even joining the club by an old guy who grew up on the river. If the perch are there, they will be caught.

BTW...I'm no expert. I know what has worked lately. I am on the river alot. Many days I get no rock. Today my biggest was about 6". :-)
