Flounder Bowl 2012


This was the 4th Flounder Bowl and there are now four different Flounder Bowl Champions.

The event began on Friday evening with a captains meeting and a barbecue. It finished Saturday evening with the awards presentations and a seafood party.

In between these two, there was a lot of action and it was not all flounder fishing. It takes a lot of work by a lot of volunteers to set up for this event each year. A line of storms came through Friday night and wiped out everything. All of the tents were not just knocked over, they were destroyed. All of the tables and chairs were blown all over the place. It looked like a disaster area. The word “heartbreaking” was used many times. The volunteers fishing wished those staying behind, the best of luck and just hoped something could be done in time for the party. When we got back in, we were amazed at what those people were able to do. I do not know all that helped out but some are: Charles Southall, John Hunt, Mike and Christy Hanna and some very fast, emergency deliveries and set up by ABZ Rentals. It looked like nothing had happened at all.

117 boats fished this year’s event. Boats were greeted by rough seas left over from the storm front. It calmed down as the day progressed and it turned out to be a very nice day on the water. Large flounder proved to be hard to come by for most of the fleet. Boats using wire-line to work hard structure had the most success.

This year’s Flounder Bowl Champion is the “Wired Out” captained by Jim Davis. Their 3-fish stringer weighed 18.43 pounds. They received the Flounder Bowl trophy and $5,000.

Second Place is the “Fatty Flatty” captained by Barry Bradley. They weighed in 16.97 pounds. They won $2,000.

Bryan Cockrell and the “T-Mo Express” came in third place with a weight of 16.05 pounds. They won $1,500.

Fourth Place is the “Tip Top” captained by Glen West. They weighed in 16.03 pounds. They won $1,000.

The “Albemarle 24”, captained by Alan Hall, came in Fifth Place with a weight of 15.34 pounds. They won $500.

Sixth Place is the “Miss Janet II” captained by Neil Taylor with a weight of 14.79 pounds. They won $250.

59 boats entered into the Big Fish Calcutta. The winner is the “Tip Top” with an 8.5 pound flounder. The Calcutta win was $5,900 bringing the “Tip Top’s” winnings to $6,900.

The Top Lady Angler is Jennifer Hall, fishing on the “Albemarle 24”, with a 5.23 pound fish. She won $100 and a pair of Costa sunglasses.

The Top Youth Angler is James Dearnley, fishing on the “Out Numbered”, with a 3.66 pound flounder. He won $100 and a pair of Costa sunglasses.

The Sponsors Challenge was won by Capt. Craig Paige of “Paige II Charters” with a stringer weight of 13.35 pounds.

Teams not placing in the top six were placed into a drawing for a “Lucky Dog” award. This year’s winner is “Reel Tease II” captained by Randy Richardson. They won $500.

It was a tough day of fishing w/ a morning filled w/ 4 ft'ers at the CBBT from the stormy night, and the Big fish weren't very hungry. We caught a 4 man limit and plenty of shorts, but the big fish were hard to come by. The Captains Meeting and the Tournament Party was a complete success once again. Thanks to Jorg Head for putting it together and all the volunters that make it happen.

Since I keep a boat at Salt Ponds and live here beside the A dock--which I overlook from my bedroom windows..... I just had to make a note of the top boats in the Flounder Bowl.

John Perry, who is my neighbor , and a wire line angler , has scored high in all of the Flounder Tournaments since their inception as a local tournament many years ago with 20 boats participating at Wallace's in Fox Hill. . John and his crew (not including me) have won or scored highly in every flounder tournament the Club has sponsored. Unfortunately they were out of the money yesterday, as his boat just missed sixth place. (the last winning spot.) John Perry is a dedicated wire line angler who retired and moved his home and boat to Salt Ponds several years ago from Richmond. I must ask him where he learned to wire line, as it is a technique that must be "learned".

Wire lining was pioneered by Dr. W. A. Boatwright in 1955 when braided stainless . steel wire replace linen line as the favored fishing line in the James River , alongside the pilings of the James River Bridge. Boatwright was a charter member ( approx 12 men) who formed the Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fishing Asso in 1957. He was also selected as the first President of PSWSFA. Dr Boatwright brought me to the PSWSFA club meetings in early 60's as a guest.

Wire line was used to fish many difficult , obstructive piers , bottom , pound poles, and of course the James River Bridge. When the Hampton Roads Tunnel was constructed, then the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, the techniques and the anglers moved to those bridges and tunnels fishing for trout (weakfish )and large bluefish (both in abundance around the CBBT, hailed as the best artificial reef in VA. Often , years ago, when the current slowed at the CBBT...we wire liners caught many nice black sea bass and a few flounder. Some anglers began to successfully target flounder as the weakfish and large bluefish disappeared.

NMFS & ASMFC have managed a recovery in flounder abundance and recreational anglers , using improved , wireline techniques score nice catches of summer flounder regularly in the Chesapeake Bay around ship wrecks in the ocean , at VMRC constructed artificial reefs , and at the man made tunnels and islands.

Wire line use has declined over the last few years as it is "meat fishing"--that is it is not as sportsmanlike as light tackle with live bait and jigging of lures at base of pilings, or around debris on the bottom. I continue to rely on the use of braided steel wire , as it seems to be more productive than other techniques.

It is a common, local joke--if Bob Allen is going to speak to your Club, you can depend on the fact that it will be about "wire-lining" !~

Yesterday the PSWSFA completed , what many may consider the most successful Flounder Bowl to date. The Flounder Bowl has grown to be the preeminent fishing event of the year. Each year the number of folks attending and participating has grown. I helped in the food line last night at the awards ceremony and we successfully fed 700 anglers , guests and volunteers.

To end this note: I must return to John Perry, A Dock at the Salt Ponds ! John came in just "out-of -he-money," but the winner was a boat on B Dock at the Salt Ponds, and the second place boat (Fatty Flatty) was from A dock at the Salt ponds. All 3 boats have dedicated wire line anglers, who score good catches repeatedly .

That goodness for a great day, a nice party , and a successful Tournament Committee, who spent many hours making this all possible.

As usual the Flounder Bowl was a great tournament! Couldn't have asked for better weather! We caught quite a few fish but, couldn't get in the money. Our stringer was just under 15 lbs.. We also picked up a nice black drum that we released in good shape.

Thanks again for all that make the Flounder Bowl happen!

I look forward to fishing again next year.

Bob, your mention of John Perry is well deserved. John taught me almost all I know about wirelinning
the "Bridge". I never knew what a Big flounder was until I fished with JP. Got me started in tying my own baits which lead me to building wireline rods.John and I go way back and it is good to hear someone mention him. Along with John, Barry Bradley is no slouch by no means, he and his crew placed 2nd in the Flounder Bowl. I have been fortunate to have know and fished with both these guys. Although I have many large flounder to my credit, I still haven`t got one in double figures yet.
