Can you take pictures with the rice?![]()
Two weeks ago my wife was taking pictures with her Sony digital camera (worth $$$$$.cc) and placed it on the picnic table outside.
It was forgotten about and stayed outside all night through a severe thunderstorm and all night rain.
Needless to say, when it was discovered the following morning, it would not work. It appeard as dead as a rock!
We removed the battery, dried it off as best we could and placed the camera & lens in a large Tupperware bowl, filled it with rice covering the entire camera and lens, and then placed a lid on the bowl.
A week later it was removed from the bowl, battery installed and it would not come alive. It was then left on the dining room table for several more days in ambient temperature.
Again, after a few days, the battery was installed and the camera came alive and has been functioning as normal.
I have heard of this method (immersion in rice) tried on cell phones and other electronics with success.
Try this rice immersion proceedure if you ever encounter a drenching problem with your electronic devices. It might work for you also.

Sony has had several weather resistant bodies (only the a77 currently) but the issue is they only have one weather sealed lens (16-50 f2.8) and there is the problem one can have with rain. I know Sony is coming out with more weather sealed bodies and lenses but you were fortunate your camera fired back up. I have had my a77 out on the beach with the 16-50 in a wind driven rain and when you have both a weather sealed body and lens weather no longer becomes an issue.
I will remember the rice trick though if I get unlucky while out with my other Sony's.... Thanks for the tip!
