    Default oregon inlet kayak report

Hey folks, i'm a longtime boater but newbie kayaker. This post is a little late, but I fished the sound last weekend while the family was on vacation. I launched at the coast guard station beside the fishing center and fished out behind the coast guard station mostly. Throwing gulps and suspending baits (mirrorlures and badonk-a-donks) I caught roughly 15 - 20 trout each trip. Most were short, but i did manage a few 15's, an 18 and a 20. Most fish were caught on a falling tide, in 3-4 feet of water, up next to the reeds. I caught all the fish while staked into the sand, none drifting. One day in particular the trout were especially aggressive. I would toss out the suspending baits and as it rolled past a little drop the trout would flash on it and absolutely smash it...good fun. I also caught a few flounder, but all were short. Mixed in were some croaker. Nothing huge, but fun fishing for sure. With the number of small trout in there right now I have good hope for this fall. Most of those fish I was catching will be nice size by then. Good luck.

Thanks for the report, we have never tried at the fishing center, we always put over at Manteo and fish the cut with dismal results. Might have to try Oregon Inlet next time.

Nice going !! Sounds like a good time. I'm a newbie myself and going to give it a try this fall when I go on vacation. Who knows what I'll catch , if anything , but I'll have fun trying. Thanks for the report.

That sounds like an excellent trip. Any idea why you had more luck staked out than drifting?

I would guess i was moving too fast when drifting. The wind was rolling pretty good.

Thanks for the report. I was down there at the same time hoping to do some kayak fishing myself, but a shoulder injury kept me from being able to get the kayak on and off of my Tahoe. Friggin took everything down with me and didn't get to use any of it!
