Default flounder regs Potomac vs Virginia

    Hi all,
Hope the fishing is going well

I am turning the big 50 this week.. My Girlfriend rented a cabin down off of Cod creek.. I was going to fish for flounder most of the week even though it looks like its been slow.. We close enough to the Point lookout and Smith Point area but both are in different
waters... WHat is the size and slot in the Potomac vs Virginia waters ..

    Thanks

    Jay

Ok i have a question for you? I live in Maryland and I go by the Maryland DNR regs when i'm fishing in any part of the Potomac, but the Regs are different for flounder between the PRFC and Maryland's DNR. PRFC says 16.5" long to keep and Marylands DNR says 17" long to Keep, which one would you go by?

It dosen't matter where you live. If you are fishing in the main stem of the Potomac you go by the PRFC regs. If you are fishing in the MD tribs you go by MD DNR. Not to complicate things but if you fish in the VA tribs of the Potomac you go by VA regs. If you fish the waters of the tidal Potomac you need to brush up on all of the regulations or you can easily be in violation. The key is knowing and understanding the boundaries of the Main Stem of the River. And to add to the confusion if you fish in VA waters you need to register with their program even if you arent required to have a lisense. Sounds easy dosent it. PRFC regs are linked above on Slate Dogs post.

Very confusing for sure. I was in NOVA this past week and decided to put in at Occoquan and target snakeheads on the Maryland side in the Mattawoman, Chopawasmic, etc. I went out and bought a dang freshwater license (for like 20 some bucks) before I realized my saltwater license would have covered me (as long as I did not go to far up a creek) Did not get any snakeheads either but we did get half dozen largemouth crashing our top water weedless frogs thrown into thick lily pads and grass.

You need either VA freshwater license of MD Bay and Sport to fish above the 301 Bridge. So you did not waste your money. A VA saltwater license will not cut it north of the 301.

So I guess I am just confused when reading page 2 of this link. I thought it meant that my VA saltwater would work up to the Wilson Bridge (DC water) so long as I did not go past the identified lines of demarcation up in the creeks. Chinese algebra would be easier!
