I fished the reef last week, slow-working some plastics off the bottom in about 15' of water, and hooked up with a 22" rock. Marked tons of fish and bait. Even had the snapper rock breaking around the reef.

WOODY'S TACKLE
Great news, Brian and whoever this mil686 guy is. The reef really seems to be maturing this summer. Some of you may remember that the DNR Fisheries Service guys asked us to report on our success out there. I'm going to pass the word on to Marty Gary and Joe Evans, who were in on the birth of the reef. Mike Naylor (DNR oyster chief and Patapsco Mike on TF) and Erik Zlokowitz (DNR MARI coordinator) are posted to fish Asquith with me in a couple of weeks.
Anybody else want a reef chart? Just b-mail me.
Best, JPW
JPW. I have missed you on the river this year. Been out quite a bit in the early mornings with some decent luck.
Looking forward to hooking back up.

This is very encouraging and great to read. Perhaps not coincidentally, the DO levels at that part of the river are among the best in the Severn this year, and better than in past years. Divers surveying some of the reefs last fall also remarked how clear the water was over the reefs compared to dives in the Magothy. I also learned that an additional 17 million oyster spat have been placed in the Severn over the past year, alone. Apparently, the oyster folks were having some delay in setting reefs in other tributaries, so the Severn was the beneficiary.
JPW, feel free to correct anything I’ve written….this is a rough paraphrasing of what I was told at a recent SRC meeting.
Keep your fingers crossed....in a couple years, that stretch of the Severn could be phenomenal.

Earlier this summer, I noticed that we had a good 3' of visibility right in Valentine creek...much better than normal! I think it has clouded up with the typical brown algae bloom of summer since then...but maybe those oysters are starting to work?
