taking a 16 footer to the 2 island?

I have a 16 foot palm beach that I want to take out to the bay, i know that I have to pick my day with the winds and forecast. I am looking at one day this week and right now, according to Fishweather, Wednesday or Friday may be my best bets... is there anything else I should consider before venturing out...I mostly use the boat in the James River and around the HRBT.

It is doable. I regularly fished a 17 foot seachaser that seems to be close to what you have. I would make sure of a couple things. Make sure you have all the proper safety equipment including life vests flares, a working radio and leave a trip plan with someone. If possible make sure to take some one who knows the waters if you are unfamiliar with them. Small boats can negotiate around the bridge tunnel but be very aware of currents winds and waves. Remember Safety First!

If you know your stuff you should be good. I run a 15' whaler across the bay all the time.But then I fish all winter and nites by myself so maybe I am not the one to ask..

I wouldn't venture out alone and do have all the safety precautions, have had the coast guard look it over. I wanted to try my luck at some spades and a flounder and maybe bouy hop for a cobia...

listen to the forecast often during the day... watch for afternoon storms in the summer...(know your clouds) fish early rather than late when afternoon storms are predicted... watch for fronts... don't go alone...

Should not be a problem. I go out often when the weather cooraperates, with a friend in a 17' scout. like everyone else said watch the currents and the weather.

You guys have me scared now! I've got what is essentially a 16 foot ski boat (open bow v-hull) that we've used on the Potomac for years, going out of Westmoreland or Lewisetta. This year we're mixing things up a bit and heading to Kiptopeke. We'll just have to wait and see, but I'm all of a sudden feeling nervous about taking my 5 year old daughter out.

Wirewulf, No need to be scared just use common sense. Athearn has it right. Check your safety equipment and have the coast gaurd look over the equipment. If venturing out far along the bridge I would really recommend another adult be with you. the biggest thing is watching the waves, currents and particularly the weather this time of year.

I'll have other adults with me, but I might make them drop a few pounds before we go out! Just want to give my little girl a good experience without endangering her. She's been fussing at me that she won't go fishing with me again unless we keep and eat the fish! So I've gotta put her on some keepers!
