The city is appeasing waterfront owners with a very expensive solution by trucking spoils from a river that continues to fill in. A long term solution of hydraulic dredging is the only thing that makes sense. A real study needs to be done factoring the impacts of trucks, probable much higher fuel costs and identify the heavier sediment release areas for corrections.
Grabbing the LBR or Maple St as a dump site is a senseless waste of truck miles and fuel. I'm confident most of us who own boats and navigate the Lynnhaven inlet currents question the safety of these loaded dredge barges being pushed through that current. The current in Long Creek was blamed for the capsizing of this barge. The claim is the barge was hung on something and the currents sunk the barge. Maybe thats true but who here has ever pushed a barge with top heavy dumpsters of mud in the Lynnhaven inlet?
Anyone?!
