Severn River report, 8-6-12

A 6 species day it was!

David Policansky and I hit Spa Creek at 7 this morning for a day of white perch fishing all over the Severn. His goal was to catch some on the fly rod....which he did and then some!

Our 1st stop was by the condos as we generally take the skunk off the boat within 10 minutes of putting in.

That we did as we both caught a fish right away but it was the type of fish that was weird. Mine was a small flounder....





....and David's was a puppy drum.



That's 2 species down and 4 to go.

Our next stop was the Naval Academy wall and David got a few WP on a fly rod....

That is three species!

We then hit the towers but the wind and waves made it uncomfortable. Even thought we were catching fish, we left.



We decided to hit the bay since we were right at the mouth of the Severn but after looking around for 20 minutes we said the heck with it and went back for the perch bite. Since the wind was still kicking, we went in to Weems Creek. I had not been there for at least 2 years...

While the fishing was slow at 1st, it was in there that we caught the three other species. Starting with a croaker...



...and then David caught a small striper (no pic but no worries, we caught a few more and they were all smaller than the perch). When we 1st went into Weems, David pointed out a rock wall and asked me if I had ever fished it. The answer was no and I told him we would hit it on the way out of the creek. I am glad we did 'cause David nailed two nice pickerels in a fly!









And then a nice 11.5 inch white perch!



I caught a load of perch but my biggest was 11.25" which did not help me for the SRRKC Leader Board......I refused a picture unless I nailed a qualifier.

We had a great day out there, it rained for about 2 minutes and it never really got hot. The river was flat calm and we saw tons of bait in the main stem.

Outstanding report!!! I launch in Spa and motor past that spot all the time, I guess I will make some casts next time.

We had a very similar day last Friday with the same mix of species minus the pickerel and we had some small bluefish action. I also netted a doubler of crabs off a piling so we came home with lots-o-perch, a hard crab and a nice soft crab--a summer Severn slam!

Our 12 inch red was caught near shoreline structure in the general area of the Rt 50 bridge, it was the second Severn red on my boat this year--great stuff on the Severn Rat Reds!

SteveL- the condo spot is great for WP when the tide is falling. They congregate around the pipes...

What a great day, Ernie! Glad to see David doing more Severn time, esp. w/ his fly rod. Is he fixing to move [I]Flying Fish[I] up here?

Finally got [I]First Light[I] back yesterday. Will see what I can find out there, and report.

JPW- David is in the process of buying some perch lures from Woody. He could not believe my catch rate!

I think he likes the Severn. I told him that it would take many a trip to explore it all.....so many perchies to catch but so little time! Not sure if he is ready to move the boat there yet but we can work on him.

I thought I'd replied already...apparently not. Ernie, thanks again for a great day and for teaching me how to fish with a spinning rod. I've ordered some of those perch-catching lures from Woody. The fly rod did OK; 5-weight with a 5-foot sink tip and about a #6 chartreuse and white Clouser. JPW, glad your boat is back. Yes, I do like the Severn, don't plan to move my boat there, though, because I've got a good situation in Deale, but as you know, I can get up there pretty easily. Maybe the West and South Rivers have fish in them as well.
