my name is ryan and i am 12 i have just recently got into trout fishing with a fly rod i have tried a couple of spots but had no luck is there any good spots within 2 hours of annapolis md.
Ryan, give us an idea of where you've tried, what tackle and flies you're using and what level you think you're at as a fly caster.. There are quite a few decent trout streams within 2 hours of Annapolis, some more challenging than others. There's also a great little book on fishing Maryland trout streams by Larry Coburn and Charlie Gelso, you can get it through Amazon or pick one up at Bass Pro Shops.
Yes, get the book. There's many other fish that will hit a fly other than trout. Some great perch and pickeral fishing in your back yard for instance. Ponds and reservoirs have lots of bass and panfish. There's kent narrows night time action under the lights for small striped bass which is always a hit with a light fly rod. But there's trout too, like the Gunpowder, Morgan Run, Little Patuxent, Middle patuxent, Main stem of the Patuxent each within an hour of Annapolis. Check out the Potomac, Patuxent chapter of trout unlimited. www.pptu.org
Well, you're doing ok in my book if you've caught trout on a fly in Big Hunting Creek. Get a few Green Weenies, some San Juan Worms in chartreuse or pink to add to your box, also a few wooly buggers in black, browns and olive. Like Salmo said, there's plenty of other fish around that will help hone your fly fishing skills, and fall stocking of the trout streams is just around the corner. My favorite lately has been the upper Patapsco, tons of smallmouth bass, bluegill, redeyes and fallfish and relatively easy fishing. Olive wooly buggers in size 10-12 will take them all. When you're feeling like being humbled by some wild trout head up to the Gunpowder, it's getting toward prime time up there.
Don't sweat it, trout were made to frustrate us mere humans.
I use nymphs and midges i am an okay caster i fish hunting creek in thurmont but have only caught a couple.
I don't how many trips it took before I caught my first fish on a flyrod...and I was 30! I think it's great that you have picked up this sport at an early age. I wish I had been exposed to flyfishing when I was a younger. I live in PA, so I can't give you any input on Maryland Trout Streams, but I also recommend checking out the local TU Meeting. Good luck!
This time of year there is a lot of warm, no trout friendly water. You have fished one of the friendly places with cold water in the summer. The other close place is the upper Gunpowder River. Once the state does fall stocking, there will be other options. You can go to the Maryland DNR web site and see where they stocked in the spring. They may not stock all those locations in the fall but they will stock many of them. The book that was mentioned is a great reference for places to fish. I also recommend a local Trout Unlimited (TU) chapter. The Potomac-Patuxent TU chapter (pptu.org) has a mentor program that you might consider using as well.
