    Default Flyfishing gear

Hi all, I have been considering getting a flyfishing set-up for going after stripers on a nearby lake this fall, could anyone recommend rod lengths, weights etc. I have trout fished for years with flyfishing gear and am not sure of the proper gear for the bigger fish.

Thanks in advance for any info!

depends on how big the fish get, but at least an eight weight rod, and I would recommend using something like Scientific Anglers Saltwater taper, or something with a serious weight forward line. I don't like sinking lines, so I stick to the shallow water fishing. For that, have big poppers, decievers, clousers, and other shad imitating flies.

I fish two weight classes. for School fish inshore 8 wt is just right. Bigger flys, Larger fish, open water, or near structure in strong current (cbbt)10 wt is the ticket.

I also have a 9 wt and a 7 wt. The 9 for all pratical uses fishes just like a 10. Some times I will carry it as an extra rod with a floater and popper set up. The 7 is better for long days of casting inshore but is very light when it comes to turning a fish in running tide. Since I mostly C&R I like to land them fast and the 7 has trouble landing quickly under some conditons. It's my favorate for casting but not the best for stripers.

Other thing most of us in the lower bay do is carry two rigged outfits each. One with Intermediate line and the other with a sinker. How much sink depends on were you are fishing. From 200 gr teenys inshore to a full sink LC 13 outfit that will touch bottom in 15 feet of water.

Think carefully about the area you will fish and the flys you will be throwing and go heavy enough to get the fish in fast and release.
