I believe there is a sportsman expo in upper marlboro this weekend. good opportunity to get out and get ready for the spring fishing season. Tylers Tackle from Chesapeake Beach will be there with some nice tandems, etc. Stop out and support the local guys!!
Wish there had been some more info on this earlier. Used to always be a good show. Then it was canceled because of the economy. This is the first I've heard of it and already have plans. I hope they do well so that I can go next year.
Yeah it is def happening. I have been hearing it on the radio and the guy who is running it says he has advertised it everywhere. It starts tomorrow from 1-8pm Sat and Sunday. Here is the link http://outdoorsportsmanexpo.com/
I stopped by today to check out the place during set up and see where my booth is, taking my stuff in tomorrow before the show starts at 1pm.......lot's going on...nice booths being set up.....tri-state marine has a ton of boats in there....many booths will be full of different types of vendors.....looks to be well put together on scene.
$12.00 admission has me turned off. Having done business with Showplace I can understand the high cost to get in. It is expensive to rent that place. I hope it works out for them.
There originally was a post earlier in the week regarding this show. I put my opinion out there that the price of admission was high and because of that and the lack of vendors posted on their website I would not be attending. Its the closest show to home so convenient it is. The thing that bugs me most about the admission is the amount of money I generally will spend at a fishing show. I attend 2-3 shows a season. Rarely do I buy less than 150 bucks worth of tackle. If I am in the market for a new outfit and see what I like that amount more than doubles. 10-12 bucks when Tristate and Earliegh Heights has been less than half of that seems ridiculous. I spoke to two of my buddies who go with me and both declined due to the admission price saying that they will go to one of the other shows for less and know what to expect as far as tackle and the vendors.
We pay 4 dollars a gallon for fuel, spend hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars on bait and tackle every year, and people won't attend because of a 12 dollar admission fee? If you pay the fee and attend the seminars, it is worth every penny. The guys that are speaking there this year are some of the best fisherman on the Bay. The wealth of knowledge that is available there is worth the price, even if you dont buy one shred of tackle.
I went last night. Plunked down my $12 and only stayed maybe 2hrs.
Simply because it was about to close.
The cost didn't bother me. I spend more than that on a cheeseburger and a beer.
Plus, I still bought a few things, talked to the boys from Shore Tackle, learned a few things about speck fishing, and the highlight?
Shaking hands with the great Walleye Pete!
MSSA was set up directly between Walleye Pete and Kimbo all day long. If there's anything to the theory of osmosis I'll be a catchin' fool come spring time. We did have a several people become members, raised a few hundred bucks for the scholarship foundation, and even had a early entry to the spring tournament. However, the attendance was way lighter than I expected. I hope the nice weather and the Ravens game had more to do with it than the $12 entry. Perhaps, tomorrow will be more crowded.
I went today. I wanted to get a book signed by Mr Kembro but he was gone by the time I got there Place was almost deserted and I felt bad for the venders.
Good for attendees though as venders had plenty of time to talk about thier goods, no lines and plenty of parking. Caught two great seminars by Captns Wayne Morgan (Spring Trolling) and Charlie Sisson from Backdraft Charters (Live Lining). After 30 yrs fishing the bay I think I know a lot but I always pick up something new listening to the pros. Seminars alone are well worth the 12 dollars.

WHAT A WASTE!!! $12 to get in, hardly anything or anybody inside. A handfull of tackle vendors, TriState, a few guides and some home improvement ****?? The vendors I talked to were upset with the entrance fee, what they had to pay for a table and the poor turnout. This place was empty. Not worth the drive from Parkville for sure. Scratch this off my list. Chapter shows put this to shame!!
You're sound just about right. When I posted that the cost was just to much for that show I was being kind . Of course alot of the guys replied in their typical way with the old "what it costs to go fishing these days" the cost was negligible. I looked at the vendor list and that was what turned me off. They only had about 50 vendors of which only about a third were for fishing. I don't think they had seminars on Friday. However the seminars for Saturday and Sunday looked pretty good . It's a shame that the show evidently didn't do to well as we do need a quality fishing show in this area. The economy is hurting and it is tough to get a show off the ground. The venues and advertising just drive the cost up so high that you have to charge alot of money for thevendor space and then at the door. The fishing flea markets of which we have plenty all over the place are just plain better deals. Pasadena is obviously the top but Kent Island, Essex, Southern Maryland and Tri- State get good reviews. I used to rent tables at some of them but since I am selling used equipment you have to damn near give it away. I stopped. I always get ggod deals in Cambridge. In fact that one you should get there as early as possible as some of the good stuff is one off and disappears fast. I was pleasantly surprised at the Kent Island flea market as they have good dealers, good deals and good food. Draws a nice managable crowd.
A new show last year is one by Kings Dominion in Va. It's a drive but it was well worth it. Totally fishing and some fishing boats. Fresh and saltwater fishing. Green Top had space, Dr. Julie Ball, Northe Carolina Guides and many other dealers. I'll go again this year on Friday like I did last year. There is a saltwater show in Va. but they moved it from Richmond to Hampton. It's to bad as they have a great vendor list.
As far as the ticket price at Upper Marlboro goes, the Eastern Outdoor show in Harrisburg is $14.00 but that is a show with over 500 vendors.
