Looking for Outboard Recommendations

After a pretty exhaustive search I stumbled on a a 1998 17' Carolina Skiff, trailer and 50 hp Evinrude deal - after doing some serious negotiation I purchased the boat last night.

I DO NOT plan to keep the Evinrude even though it runs fine(i.e. I'll probably sell it in the next several weeks) and I am now looking for recommendations for a new outboard. I am going to use this boat primarily for crabbing (trotlining) but may fish a bit at the mouths of rivers and close by in the bay on the right days.

I respect and value the opinions of those on the board and am soliciting advice as to what outboard to buy - I am leaning heavily toward a 4-stroke something for good gas consumption.

Can I get your feedback including WHERE you would and would not buy?

ive got an 18' lowe side console with an 80 yamaha 4 stroke it is an incredible motor, good on gas, real quiet couldnt ask for more and would recommend to anyone, get the biggest motor your boat is rated for you can always trade down

Ed's Marine north of Richmond has good prices on yammy 4 strokes, give them a call and they price them out for you.

RJ made a good point. Delaware is the place to purchase an outboard, No Tax. Rudy Marine, Wimington quotes the same prices on Yamaha as Eds. The only difference, again, no tax. It's your money

E-TEC scores a first with EPA award


BRP Inc. tonight will receive the Clean Air Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its Evinrude E-TEC outboard engine.



“This is the first time ever a marine engine manufacturer has received an award of Clean Air Excellence by the EPA,� said Roch Lambert, vice president and general manager of BRP’s outboard division, in a statement.



Stephen L. Johnson, the EPA’s acting administrator, will present the award to BRP executives at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes innovations that help improve air quality. EPA says the Sturtevant, Wis., company was selected because its E-TEC technology has redesigned engine technology for boating.



“The EPA jury originally thought they would have to go to a 4-stroke engine to achieve such important air quality benefits,� said Jose Boisjoli, president and CEO of BRP, in a statement. “We’ve demonstrated that our E-TEC … carbon monoxide emissions are typically 30 to 50 percent lower than a similar 4-stroke engine and, at idle, are lower by a factor of 50 to 100 times.�



BRP says the engine meets 2006 EPA, European Union, and 2008 California Air Resources Board 3-Star ultra-low emissions standards.



“This is a great achievement because it testifies to our capacity to marry high performance 2-stroke technology and environmental protection benefits,� said Boisjoli. “I’m honored to receive the U.S. EPA Clear Air Excellence Award on behalf of our employees.�

If the E-Tecs burn that clean, I doubt there will be a big buildup of carbon inside the cylinders and in the ring grooves. But what do I know, I'm just a crabber using 1981 Johnson technology.[grin]
