I thought I remembered hearing somewhere that you have to label trap floats with your name and address, but I don't see mention of that anywhere on the DNR site.

Do you have to label floats on collapsable traps? If so, what information must be included?

In the booklet that comes with your crabbing license it says:
"Collapsible crab traps or crab net rings which are not attached to a pier, wharf, or boat must be marked with a buoy bearing the name of the owner."

Oh yeah ! DNR came flying by me last year while crabbing the Elk. Never boarded me but I talked to some that were boarded. They received A warning that their name had to on each crab float. It's in the regs somewhere.

    Burch,

I guess they would say they want to able to make sure you don't have too many traps out per your license. Like they have the time to check ? I just take A permanent marker and sign away. Still can't figure that darn pic posting thing. I'm usually pretty good with that kind of stuff.[sad]

What happens if you borrow your buddy's traps for the day, like in the case where two of you always go but the one that may own the traps might not be able to make it that day?

Good question Crabslayer. I have often wondered the same thing. I don't think anything would come of it if you were checked out. I have loaned my gear to my neighbor and there has never been any problems arising from him using my gear without me being present.
It could all boil down to attitude at the time of being checked. It would be advisable to have a "note" stating that your friend has given you permission to use his gear for the trip. With that, the NRP may not cite you for fishing someone elses lay or set.

What does everyone use when they mark their bouys? I find ,many markers fade out quick. I am thinking of trying a paint pencil from the wife that she uses for crafts.

I mark my noodles with a heavy black Magic Marker. It lasts all season. I rewrite over the original when it fades. Some markers melt the noodle foam slightly causing a depression. Kinda like branding.

    Jerry,
I've noticed this noodle melting too.
Oh well, will try new to just re-write over during the season.
Still gonna try the paint pen think.
