    Default Crabbing in the rain.

This morning BSR1 & yours truly performed an exploratory trip for scientific purposes on one of MD's eastern shore tribs. This particular (not to be disclosed) body of water is currently loaded with both Rec. & Comm'l. crabbers to the extent that it is difficult to find a good lay. It's hilarious how certain crabbers "think" they own a certain section of water and that it is their exclusive piece of real estate to be used by only them and their friends. Anyway, with that BS aside, we managed to pull a full bushel of decent sized, but light crabs out of the drink in spite of the fact that I missed at least a dozen. I'll blame it on rain water on my eye glasses. Yeah, that's it!!!
Per one of the local resident Comm'l. crabbers, we did exceptionally well compared to most crabbers there. We crabbed from 5:00 AM until about 9:00 and quit just as the sky decided to cry heavily. In spite of wearing rain gear, we both had not a dry spot anywhere on our slender torsos.[grin]
Our success was such that Brian made the command decision to NOT return to that particular spot tomorrow, but to head somewhere on the other shore.
I for one, will accompany our favorite TF Super Stud (aka Butthead) this sunday on his fine craft to the place of his choice (NOT the place we crabbed today) where we hope to increase our catch at least a hundred fold.

Wish us luck. The good kind is preferred.

If this board is to be helpful to the recreational crabber, how come nobody wants to give up their spots. A guy did the same thing on the bluecrab.org website. I would think its almost as bad as a rec thinking they own the water.

Way to go Jerry, glad to hear that you guys had some success in spite of the conditions. Hopefully everyone is over on the Eastern shore and we can sneak some off of the western shore tomorrow, but where there's crabs, there's sure to plenty of peeps. FJ

    Fredjr,

No one owns the water. Not me, not you, not the next guy! However some people think that because they use a particular spot on a regular basis that it is "their" spot and theirs alone to use whenever they want regardless of when they arrive at that spot. BS!!!

As to disclosing particular locations.... I do, like many other regular posters that CONTRIBUTE to this forum, on occasion divulge exact locations. It amazes me that the "BELLYACHERS" that complain are almost always the ones that contribute ZERO to this forum.

When I am a guest on someone else's boat, and that person takes me to one of his favorite spots, it would be an insult and injustice to him if I blabbed the spot to the entire Earth's residents where we crabbed without his permission. If you or anyone else did that to me, it would be the last time you or they would ever be given that opportunity.

Why is it that there can be 689 hits on a thread that reveals a good location, yet we never see 689 recommendations about where a good spot is? Someone's reading this info, but few are gifting it to the others.

Why is it that a guy with 13 total posts expects to be handed the "Who, Where, What, When, Why, & How To" when it costs $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and precious time to find and verify a good location?

It is NOT NECESSARY, NOT REQUIRED, & NOT EXPECTED for anyone to have to volunteer any information unless they wish to, without being looked upon as being "secretive"!

Fred, please recall last year when YOU bmailed me for specific info which was freely given to YOU with no strings attached. You were told how to get to that ramp and then when you arrived there you were given additional info where to set your gear. Was I holding back? What contribution(s) have you offerred since that time?[sad]

Very well said Jerry. I haven't been crabbing long, but i've found out quick that giving up a crabbing spot is akin to giving someone gps coordinates to a secret mushroom spot up in the mountains or the location of an old gobbler that you have roosted. Especially early in the season like this when the crabs are so hit or miss. Speaking of, you got them bad boys steaming yet? [grin] This is just the kind of day that I love to catch a wiff of that sweet steam wafting up off of those babies! FJ

hey, all i was wondering if it was the tred, chester, pax, wherever. i'm not even looking for depth and I'm not trying to cause trouble. When I go crabbing, I post when and where, etc, etc, etc. I live in Northern Delaware, I dont get to go crabbing in the Chesapeake as much as those that live down there. Therefore, I can't contribute as much to this board. If it were a bass fishing board, it would be inundated with my posts because I am an avid black bass man. Do you want me to contribute to topics that i think are idiotic. Like keep two of your crab trap doors closed. I just read and listen to what you experimenters have to say. I have my crabbing process and I usually catch enough to eat. I usually just post reports or something that I am familiar with and have enough confidence to talk about. Should I respond to those that ask how to start crabbing cause they are a newbie. Hell no, because this topic has been covered at least a dozen times. Last year you told me to launch at lens, information that I could have found out on my own. But I still thanked you, met you at the ramp and we both went on our SEPARATE ways. tell me this then jer, why do people even considering posting if they dont want to give up information? Should I post like this from now on....Hi ALL, I went crabbing and I caught a bushel on the chesapeake eastern shore. Good luck to everybody out there!!!

Since you stated your point, here is mine, and i'd definitely like to reiterate that I am not here to cause problems, just express my opinions.

Fred...My dear man....First of all, I don't think I have ever seen Jerry get upset like that...wow.

Secondly, you are sorely missing the point of this forum. If I hadn't talked to Jerry this morning, That would have been an extrememly useful post without the disclosure of a secret location, or a even a name of a river. Crabbing has sucked to say the least, and a bushel of crabs coming from anywhere is a good thing. The fact that he gave up the Eastern Shore, and the fact that it is still early, would narrow it down tremendously for me.

The fact that you can't respect his reasons for not disclosing a friends spot, says that you are nothing more, nor will ever be anything more than a lurker, and lazy.

Instead of whining about not getting a bushel of crabs handed to you, try to go out and find some places for yourself, and then you might be able to contribute a microscopic percentage of the knowledge and information that Jerry has shared with us.

You got Balls my friend, I will give you that. To publicly bash a guy that has almost single handedly taken this forum under his wing and give so selflessly of his time is ridiculous.

I'm rapidly getting more and more pi$$ed and I needn't waste any more time on you.
