    Default Illegal crab trap

Im sure everyone knows about the illegal crab traps. Was at Walmart today and they are selling them. Not sure why nobody from DNR has alerted Walmart.

I'm sure that won't matter to WalMart. It's illegal to use them, but probably not illegal to sell them. It's just like after market car parts. You can buy a nice loud exhaust system and put it on your car. Then a cop can pull you over and give you a ticket for noise pollution and make you take it off. This happened to a friend of mine in VA. I've seen those traps for sale over 10 years ago and they are still on store shelves. Don't waste your money on them. That's just my 2 cents.

I think we are talking about the crab alert traps! When a crab takes the bait the trap autiomatically closes and sends a float to the surface. Not illegal to sell but illegal to use just as cable and satellight converters. I am sure there is a waiver on the traps in fine print that says to contact your state DNR before using.
If this is what we are talking about, I second the motion to leave them on the shelf! DNR doesn't buy ignorance or stupidity!

I don't own any of them but why would they be deemed illegal ? Just curious because they are not the only store on Delmarva that carries these things .

    Default Illegal crab trap

The definition of collapsible crab trap which is the only legal trap that may be used in MD:
"Collapsible crab trap" menas a manually operated, portable device having a flat bottom not more than 1 square foot, and not more than four articulated sides, each with an area not more than one square foot. The trap shall be designed so that failure to apply manually exerted tension on the closing mechanism allows the crabs to escape.

The self closing "CRAB ALERT " trap does not fit the above description, therefore it is not legal to use.
