Swamp, if you can find the edge of the grass line you should be able to kill them. I find the cut off where we crab to be about 4-6'. Should show up well on a depthfinder. Great place for crabby to hide.[wink]
I was in the eastern bay a couple of weeks ago and the grass was out of control. Is it still as bad? And if so, what's the best way to deal with it?
I was running a trot line and even if there had been any crabs, there was no way they would have made it to the surface.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks,
Bob

Bob try this, carry some traps or bouys and as Lance indicaed drop them along the edge of the grass. Most likely 41/2-5' in depth the grass will stop. lay them every 50' or so then you'll have a path to follow with your trot line.
Thanks guys.
And Dale, I still want to get out on that boat of yours sometime. Talk to you soon.

Or use it to your advantage. Go out dipping crabs at low tide. Frist rig a basket with a float. I use 2 inch insulation foam tie wrapped onto the outside of a rectangular laundry basket. Punch a few 1 inch holes in the bottom so that you can get good water flow. Tie one end of a rope to it and the other to your waist.
Put your water shoes on hop out of the boat in water less than 2 feet deep and start pushing the gras with your net. I stand in one place and work the net through the grass much in the same motion as mopping a floor. Crabs will pop up and you simply scoop them up. During certain times of the year you can also do great catching soft crabs. When you do agument you crab basket with a minnow bucket, the kind ment to float behind a boat with a trolling motor. Softies go in the minnow bucket.

Now your talking Tom!
I use to do that when i was a lad, (bushel basket & intertube)
back then you could see bottom in 6' of water[smile]
With all this grass I am going softcrabbin during the next full moon cycle.
Grass is very thick in the Miles.!
I layed down in some heavy grass today, took me an hour to clean it up. Moved to crab alley. Nothing but half a dozen. I tried three spots that have never let me down but I guess even down there it gets slow. Normally I come home full when I make the trip. What a beautiful place though, I coulld handle fishing and crabbing in the ebay all the time
