I can't believe you folks up north, where I am from, have not commented on this story. How do you like Phillips now? Yes, they were drove out of the local market because the harvest could not meet their demand, so they seeked elsewhere globally and now look what the result is...declining harvest just like the bay. Very interesting...the bottom line...$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Greed.
We are very fortunate to get what we get today out of the bay. I can't say whether this will be true for years to come.

Good article. I see a lot of pluses. The bay needed a break
and the asian crab market allowed that to happen. Without
that alternate source of crab meat all crabbing in the bay
probably would have had to stop anyways. Now that the
crab are on the rebound we just need to manage it better.
As the asian crab industry kills itself off and thier govt's
shut it down to salvage what is left, the bay crabbers
will be in the perfect position to take advantage of it.
Of course Phillips will be up against it at that point.
Na, they will come to the Bay crabbers (the ones that
are left) and buy from them. And guess what? The Bay
Crabbers will sell them all the crabs that they want.
Buisness is buisness.
This is not new, and it's just not Phillips. Every restaurant that I frequent, I ask where the crabmeat comes from and the wait staff usually doesn't know. But if you push it (and I do), most will tell you (or show you the can) that says Indonesia or Thailand. Try it next time in places like Clyde's and even in a seafood restaurants right on the Occaquan River. We are so conditioned to the spices, we don't even know the difference in crabmeat.
I'm afraid to ask at G&M or Angelina's. My heart would be broken.
There is an enormous demand for live Chesapeake Bay crabs. I hope they continue to conduct they're business over seas. Most of the crabs that Phillips use are sooks...no money anyway.[smile]
