Bucket O Lead - Whats it worth?

One of my brothers is an automotive shop service manager & gave me a 5 gallon bucket about 3/4 full of lead wheel weights (100lbs+). I don't want to keep until the next lead pouring party, so who wants to swap me for some 6, 8, 10, 14, etc, etc, sinkers or whatever?????[grin][grin][grin]

That automotive lead is harder than pure lead. It has a tendency to stick in the molds. It will expand when cooling and is hard to get out of the mold. It also is brittle if not heated all the way to about 800. I don't use it any more, but all I make is 20 oz. It may be ok for the small stuff.

To add to what POC said, please do it in a well ventilated area...The break dust and such coming off of those wheel waits will make you gag...

Tire lead weights contain the alloy antimony. It causes the lead to harden from a molten to a solid much quicker than non-alloyed soft lead and thus does not fill molds with any detail very well. It begins to harden almost as soon as it begins to pour. It may work when pour large sinker weights, but still it may not be worth the trouble it is going to cause. Soft lead is cheap and readily available.

Just mix it in with pure lead, and it will pour just fine. If anyone lives in the redmill area of the beach and needs to pour, let me know. I keep it set up in my garage, and have all the molds. Capt. Joe

The people I know who pour their own soft lead bullets say that the antimony in the wheel weights will come to the top of the molten lead if given a little time. It can be skimmed off with the rest of the dross before you dip the lead to pour.

I can't agree about the wheel weights. I've been pouring with them for years and never had a problem. I use do-it and reading molds and as long as the mold is hot enough they will pour fine.
I pour 1/4oz jigs on the 7/0 hooks for trolling and as small as 1/2oz shad heads and banana jigs. I've poured bell, bank and trolling sinkers up to 28oz with no trouble. Just as soon as I make the pour I open the mold and release the sinker and pour another with no problem sticking....
I'll be glad to take any wheel weights that aren't wanted...

At a Richmond lead pour a guy (4J's?) threw chunks of parrafin wax into the lead which vaporized and burned off some of the shmutz on top.
