    Default Any TLD25 line suggestions?

[grin] In December I bought a boat with long enough legs to reach bluewater and just now secured my first quiver of offshore gear and need suggestions on line for TLD25s. I have been very pleased with trilene big game mono and offshore anglers spectra for bay and nearshore fishing but realize that blue water offers significantly different challenges.

I have heard of using spectra on the TLDs with a mono topshot but do not know the advanteges/disadvantages. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also would like to know if my 113h senators with 50lb mono will hold up out there.

When I was 18 I worked on a private sf yacht and got a little time in as mate, capt, and the like but that was 22 years ago and I am not confident that I could duplicate the sucesses that we had back then. I would welcome a HO or be willing HO for you to get some experience.

I use #40 momoi blue diamond on my tld 25's and 15-20ft of double line tied to the swivel using a Uni-Knot. You can tie the double using a Spider Hitch, Bimini Twist or the Aussie Plait. I use the Aussie. I would stay away from the Spider Hitch for offshore trolling. It is a fast and easy knot to tie and it's a strong knot, but it just doesn't have the shock adsorption as the Bimini or the Aussie Plait. That is just my preference.

Or you don't necessarily have to tie a double at all. but with #30-40 class line I feel a lot more comfortable with 15-20ft of double line, plus when you get a few cranks of the double on to the reel you can put a hell of a lot more pressure on the fish and bring him in gaffing range a lot faster.

Sandy, how much 40# does the 25 hold? I know it's 450 yards of 20#.

    Thanks for your replies!

Capt Ben - What did you catch??

Smallmarlin - How large of a fish are you comfortable with on your TLDs?

    Darren,
Since the 40# momoi blue diamond has a slight larger diameter than (lets say 40# Ande) you cant get as much line using Momoi. But the advantage that I like using the Momoi is that the break strength is greater the Ande. The Momoi 40# would probably break around 65-75# unlike Ande that would break at around 50-60#.

To answer your question I would get about 380-425 yards on my 25's without using a Top Shot.
I haven't put a line counter on my reels to be 100% sure. It's just a guess.

    Jfletcher,
I'd feel comfortable with any fish in the ocean with my 25's. First and foremost you must have 100% confidence in your crew and 200% confidence in your equipment. I've caught 150# Bluefin with no sweat on the 25's.

I put #30 Mamoi on all of mine. I think it holds 600 yards. We have one with #40, but I prefer the 30. They work a little better for all purpose, drum, cobia, sharks, and for winter striper trolling. I have found that the 40 wont get quite as deep, and with proper drag setting you are only talking about 2.5 lbs of less drag, but with a lot more capacity.

That is only my personal 2cents, you might want to try both to give yourself some options while your out there.

    Good luck with it.

You guys are killing me. You might want to use a line counter the next time you spool up. I have a 25 that is spooled with 30# Momoi and it didn't hold 400 yards.

We caught 7 tuna, 4 of which were on the 25's.
