    Default Brining bait!!

No offense taken Skip!!! I learn as much from posting my own threads as I do from reading and replying to others. I am quite new at offshore fishing and I guess the basics still apply like changing out the baits. The day we were out there nobody got bit basically all day and I guess we/I got a little discouraged/lazy!!! Every time I'm on the water I get a little better. I firmly believe that the days you get skunked are the days you learn the most and I learned a lot here!!!
    Thanks

    Default Brining bait!!

Just a suggestion guys. I place all the bait (in sealed bags)that is going fish that day in the bait cooler then salt the ice down. Usually a box of salt per roughly one 28-32 qt cooler of ice. Dump in about a gallon or so of water, preferably sea water. If your mix is right it will bring the temp down inside the cooler below zero and your bait will remain frooze all day. As the day goes along you may have to add some ice and salt to keep the mix but Most of the time when we come in, the left over bags are still hard. It just a poorman's "onboard freezer " and it does a pretty good job on the brews too. Be careful though, sometimes it will blow the tops off the bottles........jim

My method is simpler. Thaw in salt water. Rig. Place in cooler
belly up. Sprinkle salt. Go fishing. Been doing it for 30 years that way and it still works.

If they get a little stiff loosen them up before you put them out.

Always devise some sort of draining barrier to keep baits
    away from ice.
