I know many of you pull a trap and I have in the past, but it is time for an up grade. So the question is. What do the pros use? I have used a stump rod and Penn 10 o rigged with single strand monel wire but it has a very loud hummm. I have just stumbled across a new PENN 50tw for less than 400 bucks and I think this will make a great reel but what kind of rod? Bent butt or the same old stump? The rod I use now is light and very easy to handle.It also has some rollers and a swivel tip.What kind of line? Power Pro? What size? How Much? What kind of backing?I do not want the humm this time around. Most important I do not want to spend a fortune but I do want a good set up that wll be easy to use.

What size planer are you planning on pulling? A Penn 50 won't hold much over a #10 I don't think.
Short bent but is the way to go. Works good to get the rod tip more in line with the angle of your fishing line, plus you can use it in a stand up harness. Only draw back is you need a spacer for it to fit in a normal rod holder. A roller and swiveled tip is a must as well as a roller stripper. What's in between the two I don't think matters much one way or the other.
A lot of guys won't pull wire because they say the hum kills the bite. Tuff line, battle line and power pro are some of the more common lines used.

Harvey back on the Outer Limits always pulled wire line on the planer rod - everyone knows how many Tunas he brought back. Hum didn't seem to affect his catch.....

one of the biggest bft I caught last year trolling was on 30 ft of cable to a #24 planer. lots of hummmmm

When I fish a big planer offshore the rod never comes out of the holder. I sure don't want anyone on my boat to be hooked to one in a harness. Let a fish throw the hook & the planer reset on you one time...you'll know why. If the rod is out of the holder, overboard it'll go. I think of these rigs as 'meat' rods and they stay in the gunnel. They are only good for putting meat in the boat.

A small planer, up to a #4 or so, is a different story...they are wimps when compaired to the big boys.

Rollers aren't needed, but may add a little added insurance. I know many planer rods that commonly pull up to the big 24s rigged with ring guides. With that said, you should be able to get a bent butt 80 class rod with roller butt & swivle top for around $250 (or less maybe). Unless you are hard on your rods (ie. drop them, bang them around, etc) hard ceramic rings are up to the task.

Planer rods my very favorite topic!!!! Ms. I am no expert at planer rod fishing or offshore fishing for that matter but I am undoubtedly an expert at finding a deal!!!! When I get to work I will elaborate and tell you about my "Carnage on a Budget" planer rod and all the info. that gopes with...... the where, what, when, who, and why's and best of all the how much you will be pleased! I quit using it . I prefer to run the planer off the cleat and
use a clip and rubber band on the line. IMO it makes life
easier.

I can tellyou the Trap with wire works like a champ. We caught 9 of our wahoo yesterday on a trap with 250 pound cable and they loved it.
