Line in at the hot dog at 7:00 am, and first BF tuna in the box at 7:30. Hit the GBirg/GM. Trolled a little longer having mutiple hooks on chopper blues. Put 5 in the box. Heard reports of some people at the fingers catching YF. We picked up around 10:00am and ran to the middle finger. Only seen one other boat. Trolled toward Norfolk Cayon no bites nothing. Picked up and ran out to the canyon. Trolled for a while and then as we were making our way over the tip dropping off into the deep stuff this is when it started . Was using a #3 planer and a 5 inch B/chrome spoon. My penn115 started to screem. Grabbed the rod and tighten on the drag. Still running. Spooled me down to about 100yds left. Had tighten the drag three diferent times during this run to try an stop this fish. Now that the grease in my reel is smooling and the handle is burnning hot(burn marks on my forearm) I try to gain some line. No luck. Hold far a few minutes with the fish making short burst to pull some line. I've never in my life felt something this strong on a fishing rod. We poured water on the reel to cool it off. We began to back down on the fish so I can gain some line. Gain some line and tighten the drag just a bit more. Now where in dead lock. I try to pump the fish but cant gain nothing. Loosen the drag slightly dont want to brake the 80lbs spider mono. We try and back down some more but the second the engines went in gear the fish ran down to the deep one more time. Now looking at about 100 yds left on the real again. About 20 to 30 mins into the fight still just dead lock cant gain but I had the drag tight enought all the fish could do is strip a few yards at a time. This went on for a few more minutes. Make a long story short after 10 more minutes of dead lock the 130lbs leader broke in the middle. Will never know what this was. I can only guess probably a large tuna of some type. then after trolling a bit more we picked up and ran back to the hot dog. Picked up some Bf and a king mac. In all a good day on the water, very calm seas, and something to talk about. Mabe a few rookie mistakes tighten the drag like that but thats fishing.
Damn...sounds like a big SLOB Tuna to me...maybe some more Giants roaming around out there.
I'll bet that was something you won't forget (even though the fish got away).
Nice work
Glenn
