Great day out on the water!!! Glad you guys got into them!!! Wish I could have gone... Maybe next time! Keep inviting me!
Becky-
Left Rudee at 5:45 because of the reports with trash in the water from the hurricane. I had Eric, Bill (HIT N RUN), Jake (jakeg), and Jim (Turkey Feeder) onboard. We steamed out to the 30 fathom line at around the 460 line. The reports were good from that area. Ended the day on the south wall of the canyon.
Around 8:00 we finally dropped lines in….solid action until we finally pulled the lines in a 4:15. We had 5 mahi and a pup tuna about the time Chumlord had his spread in the water. It was crazy. We fished there another 45 minutes and decided to move on to deeper water looking for bigger tuna. Bill wanted to get away from the mahi because we were running low on bait fast at that pace and would have been done fishing in another hour or so. From this point on the day is a blur to me with all the fish coming over the transom. I think I remember a white that sniffed the bird/GM. I remember bailing 30 or so dolphin on the lobster pots (sorry Lou they were bigger when we first got there but they all ended up in our fish box). I definitely remember a bigger marlin being hooked and fought for 15 minutes before he broke the leader. Bill saw him free jumping or the starboard side moments later and so did a 25 Carolina Classic. We talked to them a few minutes later to confirm what we saw. And of course I remember loosing a Green Machine spreader bar on a multi fish hook up because a drifter bite ran over the line and smoked the mono……I think that tuna that Jim had on the bar was a big one. I remember telling Lou to get his a$$ here now. I remember running out of ballyhoo (4 packs) and Sea Dragon (Jake D.) saving our butt and dropping off another pack. Last but not least I remember Eric in a 35 minute stalemate with a brute tuna (later went 44lbs on a scale). This fish did not want to give up.
What a great day on the water and a great bunch of people. Bill and I have talked about getting together to fish all summer and we finally did it. He had smoked the tuna at OI the day before so this was a walk in the park for him and Jim but sure kept everyone busy just “flappin around” out there and getting lucky around every corner. Jim…your new board name needs to be SBD (silent but deadly)…you were always working and I appreciated that cause these young bones get tired quick. Eric is a newbie but held his own in the pit and is welcome on my boat any day. Jake…well….you’re just Jake…….and a hell of a fish cleaning machine.
Quote of the day heard over the radio…..”98lb yellow fin hooked up”……oh…the fish tales on that boat on the way home. The fish was 50lbs but gave us a good laugh.
Final Tally
45 Dolphin
6 Tuna (3 pups, 2 - 30lbs, and a 44lb’er)
6 Bonita (sea bass and bailing bait)
Tons of bites
Not my favorite song but it fit the mood for the day....Lenny Kravitz "Where are we running?"
