For all of you catching all those dolphin off of the weedlines, what method are you using. Trolling? Can someone describe what baits etc you use for "bailing"?
Bailing Mahi is like taking candy from a baby... EASY!!!
Light Tackle, small egg sinker (1/4 oz), 4' leader (I use 50 lb. mono), small cut bait (squid, balleyhoo, bonits, etc.)
Pull up to the matts, buoys, logs, milk jugs, just about anything floating, toss out a small hand full of bait and look to see if anyone is home. Always give it more than one look, it may take a few minutes for the fish to some up.
When the mahi appear, toss out the baits and have a ball. Keep at least one fish in the water at all times, it tends to keep the school at the boat, not the brightest fish in the ocean, but pretty to watch and fun to catch..
Warning, you and your boat WILL BE COVERED IN FISH BLOOD!!! Clean up when you are done, those blood stains can be a bear to get off later....[excited][excited][grin]
Exactly what Lucian said. Couple of more things. If you are around big weed lines you might want to pitch a floating marker. The fish will stay with the boat to a point, but will eventually bolt back to the cover of the weeds, and they seem to know exactly which one they like to hide under. The float will stay in the line and put you right back where you found them.
When you're bailing put one guy on deck with a dehooker. You can bail fish in a hurry when one guy is flipping them off a hook in a couple of seconds and the rest of the crew are almost continually fishing with bait in the water.
When we are in a good weed mat or something that looks like it will hold dolphin, we have a couple of light tackle rods with a bati I call chuggers. We throw these out and if there are dolphin on them, they will 8 times out of 10 hit them. We get them to the boat and start to bail them. The chuggers are naked small baits we use to cover more ground and they work great. Pink and white always seems to work best. Just my $.02
They eat about anything. Butterfish chunks, cut hoo, squid, etc. What you will find is that they will become wise after a bit and you will need to switch off. I like a regular old jig head and a bass assassin on a light tackle rod w/spectra.
Those little buggers were so hungry last week that I was pulling the line of my spinning gear and dropped the hook in the water with no bait and they took that. It was as fast as you could bait and get it in the water.
