Fished with my god buddies Glenn (GAW), Kevin, Terry, and my best friend & son Garrett. Thursday was his birthday so I let him miss school for an "out of town" commitment. Left Little Creek at 5 am and put lines in just west of the tip soon after 8. Sounds like there was a bite of decent size YFT just west and just east of where we started, we drug baits for a while.
Worked the north & south walls near the tip for a couple hours and then found some 20ish fish near the weed line in the center of the canyon. Picked up one just off the line, then circled back and had 4 on, circled one more time and got the 6th. All YTFs in the 20# range. Not big, but fun. 2 came on the bird/GM, the other 4 came on flats and short riggers with skirted hoos. Had a green spreader bar in short center that may have brought them to the baits alongside.
As we're passing one of the lobster balls, Kevin jumped up and is droping back and working the flat like he's after the prize fish at the WMO. I'm jazzed as he says "got him". "him" was the smallest dolphin I've ever seen. I admire the man's skill at feeding the fish a ballyho that is half his body size. After a good laugh, we were back at it. Had chicken bites all day, most did not come tight. Around 2 we headed SW looking for one of the grass mats in closer to bail some dolphin to finish the day. never found a large mat, but found some decent size beds, but noone home. Trolled a bit in the fingers area and got a late day falsie on the birg/GM.
Picked up and headed in, little scare as we passed a bass trap buoy that had a line trailing about 100' from it. Unfortunately I passed about 50' from it. Luckily it was no match for the detroit diesels, but made for a scary moment. After Glenn went overboard to check the props, we were on our way again into a beautiful sunset while headed to the barn. Nice day all around with a great bunch of guys.
Nice job Bill and crew. I saw ya'll working the same area. Tryed to call you on the radio. Must have been on the wrong Ch. Congrats again on the catch............
Nice, way to work those tuna. I hope you guys get to fish that awsome water late this season. The fishing should just keep getting better & better as the fattys head south.
Always a blast on the Taxi.-- fun day, thanks Bill. After reading the reports, it is interesting to note that some caught all on plastic, while others did better on the meat-- damnifino. Pretty day, none the less.
I just can't get used to the no current out of Va beach-- kinda nice in some respects.
