Has anyone heard any reports from the Hambone / dog area?
I'm trying to make it down on sunday, but I'll be driving to and from OC on the same day, so I would rather fish out of OC rather than driving the extra distance to Chinco for the NSSS. If there is a decent chance of catching in the OC local, I would rather save the extra distance....
Also, does anyone know offhand how far it is from OC to the NSSS? It looks quite a bit further on the map...
On the Bass Barn, Capt. John on the Hook Up posted the following report:
"We just heard of a really good (Actually better than good) day chunk bite on Yellowfins 45-60 lbs by a few boats that got out Wednesday. Not going to give out the location but head south along 30 fathom line from Hot Dog and you will be in the general area. Also hot bite on BFT inshore for the smaller day trip boats. If you get the weather give it a shot from what I heard this evening it was loaded with BFT.
Capt John"
He runs from Cape May and is a real straight shooter so I would consider this a reliable report.
Probably a very dumb question, but what does NSSS stand for?
I know that I have been there since the incommunicado posted a catch from there, and I was fishing next to him?
Thanks in advance.
BTW, the only boat to fish out of OCFC this week was the Pretty Work, and Capt. John did very well chasing draggers between the Hambone and the Dog. Caught a 144, another between 80 and 100, and a 60 ish, releasing 22 others. All on guts, and he said that one of the draggers was not really sportfish friendly, and words were exchanged, so be sure to be courteous.
Franky - thanks for the report on Hambone/Hot Dog area. One of the charters out of Fisherman's Marina also caught a couple of bft behind scallop boats at Ham Bone last weekend, but they were small (about 30 inches). Recreational boats can only have one bft 47 inches and above starting 1 Oct.
NSSSS is a joke on TidalFish and stands for Not So Secret Secret Spot, and it is roughly at 900/800 (just north of "Unexploded Ordnance") on your chart.
Thanks for the name correction. You know us silly charter boats, we just call it the 900/800. Go figure. There, and the lumps around the 930 line have been good to all of us this year.
I liked the 900/800 back in july when we could go there, put a butter on the bottom on 130 pound leader and get bites out of 100 pound class bluefins, actually, to be truthful, I liked it even better when we could troll those same fish.
