I replace all my mono each year but have some 50's with Braid backing and now use that connection. I have found that the connection is alot smaller and neater than a uni to uni. I guess my top shots are about 150 yds.
I decided to try using hi-vis line on my out/center riggers rods this season. I do not need to replace all the line on my reels as it is only a year or so old. I figure a top shot of hi-vis is the way to go.
Does anyone do this and if so how do you install the line? How many yards of hi-vis/top shot??? What knot do you use to join the two lines??? Ect. ect.
I am thinking of 150-200 yards of hi-vis and a Bimini twist/Albright knot combination to join them.
I have all 50 TW Penn reels spooled with 80lb Ande

Lou: Yes, I used hi-vis this year, and have sworn to NEVER put another inch of Hi-vis on my reels again. As a charter captain friend of mine so aptly put it, he said: "Tom that hi-vis line sure does look pretty behind your boat, but have you ever held a piece up above your head and looked at it from the same angle the fish see?" Well, I did, and it lites up like a neon sign. I've gone back exclusively to Blue Diamond Momoi. The only time I have ever been completely skunked offshore was a trip in which I used hi-vis line. May not have had any bearing on the trip, but I don't want to take any chances. If you decide to use it, I think I have a brand new spool of 3000, 80# that you can have.
I respool EVERY YEAR!!! Reason... When the big one hits, I want every advantage I can get...
Line of choice - Blue Diamond Momoi!!! Reason, low vis in the water, can see the line in the air and it HOLDS UP!!!
I caught that Big Blue Marlin last year - 3 1/2 hour fight and the line HELD!!
JMHO!!

Lou,
Use dacron backing next time you spoll. Add 200 yard topshot of mono via a splice. I've done it a bunch of ways and this is the way! [grin]
I wouldn't use high vis on any rods that might be used for chunking.

Switched to yellow hi-vis line one year. Did not catch as much fish, never caught a tuna all summer when you have to catch them on flourocarbon wind-ons in Hatteras. Went back to the Blue Diamond Momoi, and started to catch them again. I think the hi-vis is only good for seeing it behind the boat. If you have good eyes you should be able to see the line anyway, if its sunny anyone can see clear line behind the boat. I'll never go back to hi-vis.
