A while ago somebody posted pictures of TLD 50'S and some other graphite reels broken in action.
Does anyone know where this thread is or has pictures?

We busted the frame on a 50 TLD couple of years ago! cost couple of bills to have the frame replaced as shimano said reel was out of warranty.Anyway I love shimano but will never buy a 50 tld again. We still use Tiagaras & TLD 25 and 30s but will not use a harness on the lugs as we feel the tug of war between the harness and the rod causes the frame to crack. My personal opinion is that a reel with a 80# class drag set up should be able to withstand use with a harness but who am I to request such a thing!! shame, first fish the reel caught was a 400# blue marlin[operated flawlessly-no harness] capt Ken HOTSPOT SPORTFISHING OC, MD

    Default Graphite frame reels breaking

Three or four weeks ago I saw a billfish tournament on TV. The tournament was for big bucks. On the last day of the tournament a Shimano TLD exploded while fighting a fish that would have won the tourney. The captain said that broken reel cost him $370,000. He yelled a message for Shimano at the camera but they bleeped out most of what he had to say and they smeared his extended middle finger. I can't imagine that same thing happening to a Tiagra or Penn gold, but I'm new to the graphite line of reels. Some folks swear by them.... others swear at them.

IMO they are perfectly fine for those who fish say 15 or so or less trips a year. If you fish any more I think the Tiagras are definitely the way to go. I'm really just comparing the 50 and up classes of reels. The 30's and smaller are great reels for that class of fishing. In the long run though, you'd probably be better off purchasing the smaller comparable Tiagras vs. the Tld's. I'm talking the loooong run though.
