No fish in the box...Big Bummer. All the way out there for nothin.
On Monday, August 7 Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the Nick Faselis charter out on the Hooked Up II and after speaking with Phil who had the Canyon Runner out at the Dip where it was slow, decided to head to the Toms Canyon. They put lines in a couple miles short of the tip in 300 feet of 80 degree water and caught a 60lb longfin on a bird/green machine combo on the WWB in first 15 minutes. They worked off to the tip and went 0 for 2 and then moved off down the west wall a couple miles inn 500 feet of water where they found a big body of fish and trolled 19 yellowfin from 4pm to 7pm. Their last bite on the troll was a white that they fought for a short time before jumping it off. Most of the bites on the troll came on Canyon Runner Mini-mamba bars in blue/silver, Green Machine Spreader Bars and green machines as well as ballyhoo skirted with green mini-mambas. They set up on the chunk in the same area and caught another 3 yellowfin between 9pm and 11pm before heading home with a full box. Yellowfin were 30-60lbs.
Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the Jim Conlin charter out this Saturday to Sunday and should have stayed at the dock. They decided to follow the water south from the Carteret into the Lindencohl so they set up on the troll just north of the Lindencohl in 400 feet of water and worked out to the edge then down into the Canyon all over both walls and the mouth without a bite. They then kept moving south hoping to find good water and fish but to no avail. They wound up in the Spencer and just before dark went 0 for 2 on the troll so decided to set up there. They did nothing all night long and again all morning long and ended up heading home without a fish in the box.

Yikes sorry to hear that the Pros are having tough days as are we recs.Fish seem to be hugging the thermocline here but will take a jig(litterally) off a rigger as we found Sunday I think the fish wanted a TLD too but my buddy prevented that from happening..[grin]Next time for you and us.
Tough day, but I have to add:
KUDOS for posting even the rough trip - you don't see too much of the bad and ugly from the pros and its nice to see full disclosure :)
It also makes me feel better about my less-than-perfect record finding the fish!
Thanks guys - we have not been posting here that long but we have posted on other sites for up to 10 years and of course on our own website for as long as we've had it and we always post everything - good and bad. We have just been luck that is has mostly been all good but when the fishing is tough it is tough.
Last year between our two boats we did 85 canyon trips (65 overnighters) and only had 2 trips with no tuna. This year we have only done 32 canyon trips so far but already had 2 trips with no tuna. It is definately a tough year. But then again last week Capt. Mark had 3 trips with 20 or more yellowfin on each trip so it is not all bad.
Tough long trip for a Capt and crew that worked hard to find the fish.
