Saw them out there, very pretty boats with a nice history :)
Were going to book a king mackeral trip with the Albatross Fleet in Hatteras for the first weekend in December & was just curious if anyone had ever chartered them before. I went to their website & read the history...seems like it would be a blast! Any feedback would be appreciated.

A good book to read (IMO) by Tom Carlson is about the Albatross fleet which goes waaaay back, called the 'Hatteras Blues'. I read it this past winter.
Disclaimer: I do not know the author or have any shares invested in this book.
I went out with the albatross fleet this spring and had a blast. We tore up the Mahi. Capt ernie is a great captain and has tons of experience. I learned a bunch fishing with him.
for a great history of the fleet read Hatteras Blues.
I also have been out with Capt. Ernie, great guy. Go up top and notice how the boat goes through the water.

Capt. Fred and I and a couple of buddies chartered the Albatross III for the Grand Slam Billfish Open in July. We had a great time, even caught a nice white fairly early the first day. We learned a ton of info about fishing Hatteras from Ernie. We ended up in 8th place out of 20 or so boats-- billfishing was on the slow side that week-end. Those old boats are an amazingly good ride and I recommend Albatross Fleet without any reservations whatsoever.
Thanks for all the feedback. I'll pick up a copy of Hatteras Blues prior to our trip.
Everybody ought to read Hatteras BLues. Bought it this summer while on vacation at the new Mariners Musuem just past teachs and just ordered three new copies on the internet for friends. Ernie's late dad is widely credited with basically pioneering and starting the offshore fishing/charter industry. The book tells it all from the early 1930's. Also, has a riveting account of there last big hurricane and some cool pictures. Excellent read for anyone, not just offshore fisherman, but it's even better for us.
My first offshore trip ever, when I was 14, with my dad, a couple buddies and there dads, was with Capt. Ernie on the Albatross II. Big gaffer, then bigger king, the white marlin, then three more whites! Amazing day! Saw a bait ball of squid with a big blue feeding in it, and a big hammerhead cruising. Catching bream and bass lost a little of its mystique that day!! As I'm writing this, a 91 pound white my dad caught is hanging over my computer in my office, the biggest one of that day.
Anyway, get the book, and enjoy your day with the albatross fleet. Their boats are a little slower, but there comfortable, and besides, you don't have to run far to find the fish in Hatteras and Capt. Foster knows those water better than anyone I would venture.
a great family owned and operated fleet great with kids too. [smile][smile][smile]
