Default ELK- no luck for the newbie-help

Tried the Elk today started at Turkey point found some small ones but only one good size male. Started moving up the river up to the state park area, worked from stoney point to Timber point but only found three keepers.

I'm still new to this, only my second time. looking for any suggestions or pointers that may help.

I have ten traps right now. We worked from six to 20 feet and didn't see much differance.

    How deep should I go?
How long do you leave the traps before checking them?

I haven't been in that area in a while but if I'm in the Elk I normally look to the upper from Welches (sp?) point up to around Triton Marina. There are those that have been crabbing in the Bohemia from Veasey Cove area and away some from the mouth. Normally I crab from 4-12' depending on where I'm at and time of year. Perhaps others can chime in on whats been going on in the area lately. Also, do a search on the Elk/Bo for recent posts

    John,
    Thanks for the info!

I've been checking the reports and learning alot so far.

How long do you normally leave the traps in before checking them? I think I may be checking them too often(about 15 min)

    Bret,
I only crabbed the Elk once this year and I was at the mouth of the BO and did not do well. I have a buddy that has been crabbing the Elk all year and just went this weekend and on got 1 1/2 dozen. I think they may be moving out with the temperatures and the fresh water run off from the recent front that went through. If you are going to try again I would say to try deep with muddy bottom.

With 10 traps, I would probably wait 10m between pulls, but if you were running the full 30, you could run them as fast as you can. I run a trotline, and I never turn off my motor, I run the line in idle, then turn around idle to the end and run it again. Seems like this gives the bait enough time to soak. I run 1000' of line. If you have a depth finder, look for drop offs, I look for areas that drop 3 or more feet in a 100', and I usually start on the deeper end of the drop off. You can use charts to do some pre-scouting before you go out to look for spots.

hey sorry about sounding like bragging ya all. bret if you look at a chart same side your on ,from timber pt go north on chart till ya see bull minnow run. from there inward stay out toward channel you should still find some crabs. would be closer if you could put in on this pc of riv. i think triton marine may have a pay as use ramp, not sure. i tend to forget that elk river proper takes in canal area to turkey pt. get so used to staying in that upper part just off canal i forget. hope this helps.b dog
