my rig of choice is a 320 GTI with mono or power pro for macks, with planers or in lines and the same for rocks with sassy shads, stretches or tomics. lever drags are awesome and a couple of light spinning rigs for pulling a quarter ounce bucktail on a long line through breaking rocks or feeding blues.
I like to go with Penn 9Ms or 209s on a 5.5 or 6 ft boat rod. They have plenty of action to handle even big rock if you fish them in instead of winching them in, but as for blues they are great and I have even caught dolphin offshore while chunking with them.
I concur with fishontackle. Penn 209's on inexpensive trolling rods, 6', are plenty. You have enough other demands on your funds so don't waste resources on high dollar tackle for fish that are relatively easy to handle. Some prefer a longer, more limber rod. This is fine if they aren't too pricey.
same tackle isa also available from queens creek outfitters at same price as walmart.
imho, better reel is shimano tr-200. light strong and tough....and $30 cheaper than a 320gti.
btw: penn has discontinued the 9m.

Good point. If you can get it at a tackle shop for the same price, even a coupla dollars more, stick with the 'local'.[smile]
That stinks about the 9M. Hadn't heard that.
That is really sad news that 9Ms are history. They really have held up well for all of my fishing on the Potomac and the Bay. I hope they keep a few parts around to keep mine going.
