Default NOAA Weather Radio - Northern Neck

Many of you know that the NOAA Weather Radio for the Northern Neck is out of service due to antenna damage during Ernesto. You may still listen to the weather report that NWS would be transmitting by going to http://www.erh.noaa.gov/akq/genin.html

Thanks Peeler. I figured that's what happened but I was starting to wonder since it's been a while.

Actually, the tower collapsed when a large tree fell on one of the guide wires. Hopefully, some time this week or early next, the old tower will be dismantled, and repairs on the associated building will begin. This tower is owned by Commonwealth Communications, and our office leases space on this tower, so repairs are out of our control. The latest estimate is that it may be late November before the new tower is installed and the transmitter placed back in service. Thanks Peeler for providing the link to our NOAA Weather Radio on the web page. If you have any other questions, bmail or e-mail me. Bill Sammler - NWS Wakefield

I have been mystified by this as my home unit is not receiving but I am able to get a weather broadcast on my channel 6 (Raymarine). I have no idea where it is coming from but has local info. Anybody know?

    Coan Ranger,

That depends upon what frequency is received on Channel 6, and where you are receiving it. If you are in Fredericksburg, then I would guess you are hearing the NOAA Weather Radio broadcast from Charlottesville, that originates from the Sterling VA office. That transmitter has a great footprint, but I am surprised it's being received all the way to Fredericksburg. The frequency for that transmitter is 162.45MHz. The transmitter closest to Fredericksburg is in Manassas, which has a frequency of 162.55 MHz. On many newer radios, 162.45 is frequency 3, and 162.55 is frequency 7. Bill S.

At Reedville I can pick up the broadcast from the eastern shore. The trouble is that the forecast isn't for the Northern Neck.

    Folks,

I understand the contractor was at the site late this week sidmantling the old antenna, and beginning the repairs on the electrical equipment. Once this is complete, we are planning to install a temporary antenna, which should allow for about a 15 mile radius transmission. I do not have a timetable for completely this temporary fix, but I'm hopeful for sometime in the next 2 weeks. Will let you all know when the radio is back on the air. Bill S.
