Question about shad: Since we just opened the species listing to include ocean going fish will American Shad be eligible for club records?

Freebase American shad are caught in a lot of places you just can't keep them everywhere. Where Jim is fishing is in the Nottoway river. I've never done it so I can;t really comment on the how.

Jim, I would think that if they were caught in the Ocean and were eligible for citations then they would be allowed. As of right now they are not. Guess the membership will have to vote on that as well.

Brandon, got to get the duckie back in the tub. Be on the water sometime in mid April.

My thinking is we are a saltwater club. And shad is a saltwater fish, although not exclusively saltwater. American shad are only to illegal to posses in the bay waters, not illegal to C&R so I would think a C&R shad caught at the HRBT would be OK or regardless of where it was caught. I think we need recommendations on adding specific species to our awards list. Before we were inshore but didn't cover every single inshore species that could be caught. What we need to do is put together a specific list, then bring it to the floor to be voted on. Lot's of fish offshore but I don't think every single possible fish needs to be on the list. We have to have a manageable list. Just my thoughts. Back to work.

My personal vote would be for the following - Blue and yellow fin tuna, white and blue marlin, dolphin, wahoo, king mackeral, amberjack, tilefish, and seabass. That would add ten species to the list and these are the more sought after of the offshore species.

Mike, while there was a list of eligible species for monthly competition any species caught in the bay is eligible for club records. Adult club records however have to be weighed so the American Shad would not have been eligible since it could not legally be possessed to be weighed. The junior's rule is different and a length could be accepted. However, American Shad may be caught and possessed in the ocean as well as ocean tributaries, including those on the Eastern Shore. It seems that while they are not a part of the monthly competition they may indeed be included for eligibility in regards to club records.

I don't know if I will do any more shad fishing this year or not but I thought I'd ask before going to the trouble to weigh something.

Jim, as the only person in the club that fishes for shad it appears that you are trying to stack the deck to your favor.

Point of record, not all fish have to be weighed for record - red drum.

I basically agree with Mike let additions to eligble species go to a vote. Some one make a motion at next meeting and we vote in May.

No dog in this fight but i do catch shad while fishing other species so maybe i will get lucky and catch a large one.
